Sottocasa brings that elegance and a refined take on brick oven authentic Neapolitan pizza that we're all looking for. It's a cozy, inviting and rustic little establishment. My friend and I were looking for someplace with a great atmosphere and reasonably priced dinner. And we found just that.
Sottocasa sources their flour and tomatoes from Italy as well as their wood fired oven was built and shipped directly from Naples! How's that for ya? When I walked inside I was immediately enticed by their simplistic decorations and wooden picnic tables. We were asked if we'd like to sit in the closed-off greenhouse. Just my kind of seating. They have stringed lights from the ceiling and heat lamps for when it gets cold. Practical and pretty.
Now let's talk food. For the antipasti we ordered the Prosciutto, Mozzarella and a side of Arugula salad. It was all extremely fresh -- a nice beginning to our meal. As for the main course we weren't too hungry and decided on splitting a pizza. We chose the Salsiccia: tomatoes, mozz, hot italian sausage and basil. Sigh The dough was perfectly crispy and held all those ingredients fairly well. Brick oven just has that home-y taste that you can't get anywhere else. That crispy, slight (in a good way) charred crust. Brings me back to when I visited Italy when I...
Read moreService was SLOW. Others who were seated AFTER us were served before us which was puzzling as we ordered off of the same menu; nothing specially prepared. The pizza sauce was flavorful but drippy making the crust soggy and the pizza difficult to eat. The top of the spinach pizza I ordered as well as the focaccia we ordered as an appetizer was very burnt on top. The smell of burnt spinach was unappetizing and there was no flavor in the spinach at all, as if they just threw several pieces of raw spinach on top before sticking it under a flame that was obviously WAY too close to the food. Pizzas average $11 - $15 here and they are hardly worth it; Brooklyn has many more places to get Neapolitan pizza that are much less expensive and the food is tastier. Will not be visiting Sottocasa again. Takes a lot more than a hipster vibe and decor to make a good pizza place. Note to the chef: Neapolitan pizza should not have a "char". Burnt bread is not pleasant in any way,...
Read moreWe have eaten at Sottocasa several times and the food is incredible. The ingredients are fresh, the team is knowledgeable and experts of their craft, and their gluten free option is the best I've ever had (and I've tried a lot of gluten free pizza).
I really want to write a review though to call attention to their incredible private event capabilities as well. Mari and the team at Sottocasa threw us an immaculate rehearsal dinner/welcome party for our wedding, and weeks later our guests still cannot stop raving about it.
The hand-selected organic wines from Italy, the antipasti, salad, pizzas, and the attention to detail and guests' dietary restrictions were all handled seamlessly by the team and everyone felt such a personal connection to Sottocasa by the time dinner was done. Some of our older relatives even left early, and Mari made sure to box them some dessert to go.
I can't say enough good things about this place, so go see for yourself! :)...
