HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. If i could give negative ratings i would. We've lived in the area for 3yrs now, and my husband always does diy projects or repairs for our apartment. So he was excited when he found thus store so closeby, since going to HD was such a hassle. But whenever he goes there he always comes home frustrated. He always says the same thing: im okay with the prices being higher, since its nearby, but everytime i shop there, i feel like i am less than. They are so rude to me. I always chalked this up to paranoia and maybe differences in culture. Especially since I've been there with him before and never really notice it. BOY WAS I PROVEN WRONG TODAY.
We entered the store, just shopping as usual. Asked a guy behind the counter for help, but he claimed to be too busy to help me, but then practically bent over backwards to help a different client. Its fine. About 10 mins in, we passed by the front area and i noticed the old lady(she is ALWAYS ride and snarky, but i always thought it was cuz she was old), stopped ringing up a customer, looked us up and down and then SHOUTED "go call (random name), tell her to make sure to keep an eye on the little guy back there!" to one of the workers. Im guessing the customer was uncomfortable cuz he made a joke asking if they were checking on the "elf on the shelf". Sure enough, we were being followed around. Mind you, the store is pretty tight crowded so its pretty obvious. I dont care, follow me all you want, as a POC im used to it, plus i have nothing to hide, nor am i doing anything wrong. But its just questionable. And when we would ask for assistance the SARCASM and RUDENESS was outstanding. During one interaction I couldn't help but return the sarcasm. I am not an idiot, so if the packaging doesn't indicate the amount inside, I'm pretty sure it okay to ask right??? Here was the friendly answer with a matching eyeroll, shrug and shaking of his head: iF yOu JuSt ReAd It ShOuLd SaY. To which i replied: im not an idiot, i can read. I wouldn't be wasting my time by asking you right? To which he backtracked and answered alot nicer. GUESS WHAT, amount wasn't listed, nor the price. So he was being a DOUCHE for what reason exactly? I can say that was not how they treat all their customers, because i SAW, HEARD and FELT the DIFFERENCE. Anyway where was i? 2 women following us around the store: 1 with a laptop pretending to be busy, and a lady with a blue vest that pretended to be on the phone for an HOUR or more (now that's dedication) 😉 fun fact: that used to be MY job. So yes i know how this works. I mean i can keep going, what with the snide remarks, snarky responses and side eye. Oh and the fact that they couldn't provide us with a simple piece of twine to tie several planks of wood that we wanted to carry. Upon which they so rudely responded that they didn't have any. A construction supply store, out of twine???
When i shared all of this with my husband on our walk home, he was shocked and very offended. Especially since everytime he shops there, he usually spends upwards of $100+. He said that in retrospect, certain incidents and interactions in the store now make more sense.
Oh yeah! Lady in blue followed us all the way to the deli next store, i guess maybe to check if we were going to empty our pockets gloat about what we stole maybe? I don't know what she was expecting. And yes i know what she was doing, because i saw that she went right back into the store after.👏🤣
Happy Holidays Harry's paint blah blah. We will still be doing our shopping at your store since it really is convenient, even though you make your NON WHITE customers feel like INCONVENIENCES and PETTY CRIMINALS. Thank...
Read moreIn an era of big box builder stores and their big budget advertising we quickly forget we do not need to drive 15 minutes, wait on huge lines and no advise on projects we all struggle with. Harry's Paint and Hardware is local, knows our homes and carry's in store what we need. If they don't have it they can order it fast to arrive quickly. They have been around for a long time and going there is sort of a community center of neighbors we run into as well as those professionals who source their materials there. I recently found my painters and roofer there via Harry's recommendations. They carry the small hardware that you need in a hurry for a project - type of screw or tools necessary that you don't have. All sorts of seasonal items and full line of garden supplies are there too. Lately I found they carry a specialty cement! Later I will get a few copies of keys I need, price $2 for most type keys. Or drive 20 min to the big box store...
Read moreAmong the best hardware stores in NYC. Friendly, attentive and extremely knowledgeable staff is always ready, from locating items to offering expert level, creative solutions along with the products to immediately get them done. Competitive, fair prices. Visited twice this week for home projects, which are going extremely well thanks to their help!
It’s crucial to support local businesses like Harry’s Hardware, especially now. If you want Amazon or Home Depot to be the only companies in existence, I guess buy all your stuff there. But then be ready to pay their sky-high prices once their competition is gone. Making the trip is well worth it to keep places like...
