I can't say enough good things about my experience at House of PT so far! I've met Dr. Shane, who is very nice, but I work with Dr. Jillian Proniwych. I feel fortunate to have come across HOPT on ZocDoc and read wonderful reviews about 1:1 training. I had been referred to a therapist at Mount Sinai who was nice at first, but rushed around the most of the time, spending very little 1:1 time with me directly except to show me the exercise and then only partly watching me perform it. I was on a crowded circuit and knew that I personally needed more individual attention.
Enter Dr. Proniwych and House of Physical Therapy. When I emailed Dr. Shane for an appointment with a lengthy email about my dance, yoga and theater background, she responded herself with a recommendation to see Dr. Proniwych because of her background with dancers and Broadway actors. They had appointments the following week and soon I was in for my initial consultation. Jillian listened intently, taking notes in addition to a physical assessment for alignment, any pain, etc. She took her time and I never felt rushed then or in my subsequent visits. She came up with a plan for my treatment and we setup several appointments for the month. We did several exercises that first day and I left with an idea of what to practice, why, and how often. She sent me a follow up email with an exercise guideline and photos too for reference.
The studio is clean, quiet and a perfect place for PT. There's a bathroom with a shower and plenty of room, props, a mirror and really nice mats to work on. There is no one else in the studio at the time (except maybe her very cute, hypoallergenic dog Daisy!) and I love it!
For my treatment plan in sessions, Dr. Proniwych begins with bodywork and release techniques. I've found these to be incredibly helpful. But in addition, I've realized how important it is to do the work on my own between sessions, but this beginning part helps get me ready and reset from my work (or days I've missed) between. Then we review older exercises and add on to those. She's always answered questions and watches my form intently, but gives me space if I need to focus. We chat during the session and she's super friendly, kind and I feel comfortable with her.
As for my recovery, it's been over a month with about 1 session per week (sometimes two) and I'm feeling so much better than I did! I have days that are better than others but I've shifted my perspective, the way I utilize my muscles and even the way I walk or go up the stairs. It's a process and a lot of work, but I'm seeing noticeable results physical and emotionally too. Walking around in pain all the time is no fun and I didn't realize how much of a drain it was on my state of mind too. It took me months to find a good fit, but given my experience with Dr. Proniwych so far, I know it was...

I hurt my lower back and was unable to walk/sleep/sit without pain. After trying different therapists who provided short-term relief, I thought I would have to continue with therapy forever. I needed a therapist who treated differently and helped patients understand possible root issues in their movement pattern, which led me to HoPT.
My experience with them followed a 4-step process: Assessment (movement, pain, goals) and setting expectations (repeated throughout treatment) Alleviating pain/discomfort through manual therapy (massages, cupping, assisted movement) Developing mind-body connection and awareness - helped me understand my body’s limitations throughout the duration of therapy and how to actively engage the appropriate muscles when performing exercises Fine-tuning form and strengthening core and supporting muscles around the area to ensure good form and help reduce the risk of re-injury
The 1-on-1 engagement, clear process, and realistic expectations (for both HoPT and myself) drove me to consistently put in the time and effort (multiple appointments every week for almost 6 months) - I’m now able to move better than I did before my injury :)
In addition to all the physical work, part of the healing process also involves understanding where you may have contributed to injury (form, posture, etc.) and how you can easily help prevent future re-injury. Objectively difficult to do alone, but made easy by Jillian...
Read moreHighly recommend House of Physical Therapy! Steph is the best physical therapist I've worked with. (Which includes good/ok PT in San Francisco and a truly awful but very popular clinic in NYC.)
I started working with Steph remotely during the pandemic about two years ago. After several months of doing nothing, going back to my usual physical activities proved more challenging than I anticipated. Small injuries started to crop up that wouldn't go away and worsened.
Steph is able to address pretty much any injury from any domain I can throw at her, which is a lot - yoga, contemporary dance, flying trapeze/aerial sports, HIIT workouts, strength training, hiking, old chronic injuries, and just walking to and from an office and having injuries be exacerbated by that. Her ability to accurately diagnose and treat remotely from such a wide range of physical activities is truly impressive.
Steph herself is really personable and easy to talk to and I look forward to our sessions. She has a great admin system set up so getting billing issues resolved is fast and in reach. She's accessible by email throughout the week and has helped answer questions in between sessions for spot treatments as needed.
Even as things re-open, I've continued to work with Steph. You just never know what you're getting with a new PT clinic in the area, and Steph has done way better than other clinics I've worked with in-person. Strongly recommend, particularly if you have an athletic background that has been tricky for standard...
