With all the time I had spent eating around East Village over the years, I always walked past Village Square rather quickly to get to other places in the area. Most of the time there was usually a big crowd of people near the outside and sometimes inside. That area has quite a few late night pizza spots but this is one of the few that has been consistently busy and very well known to locals.
I just happen to be around the area after 3am on a Saturday night and you really do get those "midnight cravings" for some food (that tends to be unhealthy overall but oh so delicious). I had been walking about for a little bit and then made my way over to Village Square and of course there was a crowd of people outside (mostly eating and some waiting) and a good amount inside ordering or waiting.
Something told me I should hurry and get in and I am glad I did as they were about to close up in a short while (4am Friday and Saturday night). The space inside was designed to mostly standing room grab and go with some counter space on the side (usually just for some seasoning or spice flakes). The gentleman at the counter greeted me right away as I walked in as if I were the first customer of the day (I was definitely not expecting it). I took a quick look at the menus they had framed and looked toward the back table to see what slices were available (there was a good amount of pizzas left!).
I ended up getting one pepperoni and sausage slice as well as grandma. They have the ordering and prep down to a science which is how they handle the constant flux of customers. They ask for your name and then call it out when it is ready. I did not wait too long and all orders before me looked to have been handed out in a very timely manner.
Those thick square Sicilian type slices were always one of my favorites (of course the classic NY slice will always be one of the best). Getting to eat the pizza right when it got out of the oven is always quite a treat and more so for this place. It is a very NY thing to just be walking around and eating a pizza (especially late at night in the city). Pepperoni is always a must oder wherever I got and the grandma squares are considered fancier for me (as I do not order them often). The regret always sets in when looking at empty plates or taking the last bite of pizza crust....where you wish you ordered more slices. But Village Square definitely saved me that night.
As I compose this review, my stomach rumbles a bit and I am seriously considering taking a drive to VS to try and nab some late night slices before...
Read moreOne of the hardest things I ever had to do was break up with East Village Pizza. I'll spare you the novel, but I couldn't justify paying $6.25 for a single slice of thin crust pepperoni pizza that would just wake my stomach up and leave me hungrier than before.
After taking a few months to heal, I was finally ready to get back on the horse and find a new late night pizza spot to hit after striking out at the local bars.
On Saturday, after striking out at the local bars, my buddy mentioned this place and that it was a good Prince Street Pizza comparable. We walked in here and were met with a small line and not one, but two, neon signs. I love a good neon sign.
The staff is LOCKED in and are running this thing like a finely tuned machine. I opted to get two slices of the thick square pizza, with the cute little slightly charred pepperonis on top hehe. $11.98 total for two thick slices. HUGE.
I think this may be better than Prince Street, but if it's not, it's 1a/1b. The crust is perfectly crisped, and those pepperonis are a gift from god. True artistry.
After demolishing the first slice, I was like "Damn I lowkey could have been good with just one slice..." I think I am still a bit scarred from the East Village Pizza relationship.
I have found my new late night pizza spot. I want to leave you, my dear reader, with a quote from Marilyn Monroe:
"Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

Read moreWe visited NYC from Europe between 21-28 October, we had a list of few places to eat at and visit. Village Square Pizza was one of them based on reviews from some famous youtubers. I must say that we were a bit disappointed about a few things. First, the staff is not very friendly, what you expect from a pizza place is not red carpet of course. but you would expect a hello, smooth and friendly process to handle your request, at the end friendly greeting to send you away. None of this was experienced when we were there, the staff is not interested, they looked very unhappy, they were extremely impatient with your order as if you were obliged to know what they have on offer (some are obvious like margarita or pepperoni, but some are not), no hi and no bye at all. Second, we had 4 slices from 3 different types of pizzas they have in offer. Pepperoni pieces on the slice was so dry that you could kill a bird with it. Other kinds were also very average. Third, previous 2 points become important when you charge 6 USD for a slice. On the positive side, location is good, there is a very limited opportunity to eat in, but surroundings allow you to take your pizza to eat outside seating area or at the park across the street. Instead I would definitely recommend Bleeker Street Pizza or John's on Bleeker Street for a well priced and very...
