This was my first time at red onion and as a native Londoner myself I know a good Indian restaurant when I find it. The staff was incredible, making sure to accommodate us in every which way as they are a new spot in EV, I think they are taking careful time and consideration to make sure their customers are happy and enjoy the experience which I very much appreciated. Service was great. Now let’s get to what’s most important, the food. Now we had a whole introduction from our server on the quality of the food. They explained the core of who they are is making sure their produce and meats are cleanly sourced, raised without antibiotics hormones and chemicals which in this day and age that is very refreshing to hear. On top of this the food was DELICIOUS. I think a lot of Indian restaurants have tasty dishes but what I don’t like about some of them is the food weighs heavy on your stomach after and it’s too rich/heavy it’s hard to get through. The food was perfectly seasoned and every dish we ordered was perfect, nostalgic, tasty and exactly what I look for when it comes to Indian food. The garlic naan was to die for perfectly crispy and soft. My personal favorites were the Butter chicken, tikka masala, and lamb vindaloo. I don’t love lamb or spicy foods but there was something about this that just perfectly hit the spot it was not overwhelmingly spicy and so flavorful that the spice didn’t bother me (which is rare). They accommodated us so well and even gave us some complimentary extras. This is now my new favorite Indian spot and will be ordering Indian food to my apartment more often! 10/10...
Read moreOmg! The food here was amazing! It is so hard to find authentic butter chicken and Indian food in general in NYC! But I definitely found it here at Red Onion!! I ordered the Pandara Road Wala Butter Chicken (HOUSE SPECIALTY) with garlic Naan and a Mule cocktail. The butter chicken was AMAZING! It had just the right amount of spices and flavor. It tasted very fresh and was made to order. The butter chicken sauce on the chicken was so good that I ended up eating it all with the Naan before I even finished the chicken! I had to ask for more sauce for the chicken because it was just that good! The chicken that they used in the butter chicken dish was on the bone dark meat and was cooked to perfection. It wasn’t dry at all and was very tender! It was also a VERY generous portion of butter chicken that I received. I even have leftovers for tomorrow. The Mule cocktail and garlic naan was great too. The garlic naan was garlicky and seasoned just right. The service was pretty good too as the owner came over and introduced himself and gave an interesting backstory to the restaurant. I felt like I was there eating with family because he was very welcoming as well as the rest of the staff! The ambience was nice as well, it gave me date night vibes as there were stars moving around on the ceiling and it was very dim inside. I loved it. I am definitely coming back here to try everything else on the menu! If you want authentic tasting Indian food, then you need to run here asap, don’t walk lol. You will not regret it and your stomach and taste buds...
Read moreOK, as the jaded NYer who reads reviews and looks to see how many reviews someone has written to see if I should pay attention to what they have to say, this is my 1st Google review, so take it for what it's worth.
Varun and his family are the reason I am writing this review. Varun was informative and Attentive without being overbearing. Hearing about his family's history in the restaurant industry from the 1930s, and their commitment to freshness and Authentic Indian Spices from India were all just enhancements to some of the Most Delicious Indian food I and my dinner guest have had, and we eat a lot of Indian food.
The Red Onion is a perfect b4 or after Theatre meal spot to the Public Theatre. We enJOYed the Bottomless Brunch. The food was well seasoned, however not overly spicy (as some restaurants up the heat levels to mask imperfections) and as Varun explained freshly made. So yes it might take a lil longer for the food to arrive but well worth the wait.
The restaurant is cozy & beautiful. The stargazing, solar system ceiling and low volume background techno Indian music, along with the Welcome to my home vibe made for a delightful experience.
I highly recommend the Garlic Naan and the Chicken Wings Rechedo. We also had the Trio Kababs and Lamb Sheekh Kababs. I could make a meal of the Garlic Naan and the TIkka Masala sauce.
While I live in Da Bronx and my dinner guests in Maryland, I believe I have found a new home for Authentic...
