J Sampieri — Local services in New York

This is my first google review and no one deserves this more than John and Janet Sampieri. Almost seven years ago John and Janet designed my engagement ring. My now husband had a simple design in mind that involved various small diamonds in a celestial pattern on a thin band. We went to the diamond district first where the jewelers scoffed at us saying don't waste our time. We randomly found John and Janet because their store looked different than the rest - warm and inviting and photos of smiling people adorning the walls. Janet heard us out and gently explained that the small diamonds that we wanted were not even graded which is the profit motive for many jewelers. She wasn't deterred, was charmed by our love story and helped us design the exact ring that we wanted. We never felt rushed and would often see repeat customers dropping by for custom jewelry, gifts for birthdays, christenings, push presents, etc. I wanted a phrase from a Robert Burns poem hand engraved on the inside my husband's wedding band. They found an expert who did an amazing job. I chose a plain micro pave wedding band to match my ring. To this day people compliment and ask me about my engagement ring to due to its unusual simple design. Fast forward to today...we have an energetic 11 month old and another on the way. I lost my wedding band so we went back to J Sampieri to get a replacement. The moment we walked in the door John gave us a big smile and asked a very specific question that showed that he remembered us from all those years ago. We placed the order for the ring and a short week later I found my wedding band. Since we are expecting another baby we're bit more stressed about finances these days and when I called John up to cancel the order he was very understanding and kindly sent me a check right away. I first went to John Sampieri, through the recommendation of several friends who created their engagement/wedding rings with them, back in 2013.

John and his wife Janet are both from multi-generational jeweler families and they were so easy to talk to and discuss ideas with. John has GIA certification, and he and Janet took their time in throughly explaining the “three C’s” that drive the price of diamonds. They took their time in showing us all possible ring settings, solitaire cuts, and options within a price range. Our candid conversations included all options of size and pricing of solitaires, and how we could get a larger, lesser-grade Diamond for the same value as a higher-grade smaller Diamond, to what metals were most suitable for our lifestyle.

There wasn’t once a moment of discomfort or pushiness that you might experience at other fine jewelry establishments. We came upon our perfect rings with the informed guidance of both Janet and John, and received all paperwork for our GIA-certified diamonds and appraisals with them. It was, beginning to end, a positive and happy experience that I am so appreciative of.

I’ve now owned my wedding set for ten years (!) and while I’m not always careful with my jewelry (I would wear daily to work with kids), I’ve never had a Diamond loosen, fall out, or chip. I moved away from NYC and drove over and hour each way to have the white gold re-plated with rhodium, resized, and had small pieces of gold added within the engagement band to prevent it from turning side-to-side, since my fingers shrunk a little. I did not trust that another jeweler could do this with the care we’ve received here, and it was worth the drive. They are as perfect as the day we bought them ten years ago! I cannot say enough wonderful things about John and Janet. We live on Long Island and never mind making the trip into the city to work with them. My fiancé worked with John when picking out my engagement ring and he worked with him until he found the perfect stone. My engagement ring was perfect and exactly what I had envisioned (without actually being a part of that process). Once we got engaged, I needed the ring slightly smaller. Sizing it was a breeze and they had it finished (and cleaned) in no time. When it came time to do our wedding bands, there was no question that we'd be using J Sampieri. I wanted something somewhat unique and when my fiancé and I went to try on our wedding bands for the first time, I was speechless (which is rare for me). The amount of time, effort and care that went into making my wedding band was clearly evident. Their work is meticulous and John and Janet are true professionals and experts in what they do. Every time we leave their store, we feel like we are leaving old friends! Highly recommend them for any wedding related jewelry and beyond. Already thinking about a first...
