As a huge true crime fan, especially anything to do with New York organised crime, a walking gangster tour was a must-do while on holiday in the Big Apple. With dozens of books on Italian, Irish, Jewish and African-American gangsters and criminals, I consider myself quite the aficionado on the New York underworld. On the other hand, my wife’s knowledge only extends to what scene of Goodfellas she has walked in on or part of a documentary she has overheard. When we began the tour we were met by our tour guide, Gary, a true New Yorker with a passion for his city, it’s stories and history. The tour took us through Little Italy and Chinatown and covered a variety of gangster’s hangouts, restaurants and haunts. My wife was captivated with the stories and history, while I was having the time of my life walking through the areas I have read so much about. Gary also had a few pieces of knowledge and insight that even I was unaware of. As a movie buff, Gary was never afraid to relate information to a film or point out where a scene was shot. Our only regret with this tour was not booking it sooner. Unfortunately we chose to do this on our second last day in New York, so all of the good food, restaurants and genuine recommendations from Gary needed to be crammed into the afternoon before other commitments. At least it is a reason to go back. Overall we would thoroughly recommend this tour. It had something for everyone, whether you are a know-it-all like me, or have no prior knowledge like my wife, this tour has something for everyone. Thank you very much Gary for your wealth of knowledge, sense of humour, love of this tour and New York’s...
Read moreMy wife and I took a private walking tour. The owner was very accommodating and helpful, friendly by phone during the setup of our private tour with Joey. Upon Uber arrival, we discovered the guide sitting and waiting for us. Thus, we were able to start early. Joey was obviously knowledgeable and informed. He used a pad device to show us pictures while educating us on the history and activities of the NY Mafia. We saw several locations that are important in the history and we found Joey a pleasant and entertaining fellow. The time went quickly and we really were interested in more. He recommended the book 5 families. Immediately I ordered it and began reading within a couple of days. Exceptional. Digging deeper, I have discovered that there are indeed some things I wish we would have been shown and discussed during the tour - for example, that across the street from the Petresimo memorial marker is a restaurant where a gangster owned and everyday he essentially looked across the street to a place where the greatest police officer in mob days was honored. Oddity. Fact is that I knew little about the mob before the tour and some after. However, Joey sparked an interest that has now began to grow and I explore much more. So for that alone, the 250+ cost of the private tour was very much worth it to me! Far more worth it than the cost we paid for the 911 memorial museum. ...
Read moreTo put into words how amazing this tour is would be nearly impossible; phenomenal, interesting, fun, and amazing are all words I would choose but still don't do it justice. First of all, if you are a Mob fan you are going to love every minute of this tour. Robin is informative and detail oriented, all while maintaining great humor. She has an insight of the mafia that an average tour director or someone who simply reads would not. Even though you find yourself on the streets of New York in 2016 she has a great ability to paint a picture of what times were like through her story telling and also by using photographs and other visual aids! I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone! It is the perfect mixture of new and old New York through the eyes of a native! Thank you so much Robin, you truly made our...
