In terms of service, the waitresses at Hane 1st Ave. need to get their act together. I worked in restaurants for many years, both as a waiter and a bartender. I knew the deal. When it gets busy, you step it up. Busier: You step it up even more. These waitresses don't seem to know this simple wait-staff/bartender canon.
I weathered their bad service once again tonight, because my 2 adult kids wanted sushi, and we've been going to Hane since they can remember. I'd rather go elsewhere. I suggested Gen Korean House BBQ. I was willing to walk all the way to 3rd and 14th just to avoid the service at Hane. I didn't win. So off to Hane we go unfortunately.
I don't know why, but the waitresses don't even make an attempt to greet you at the table. Is that a Japanese thing? And on this near-ninety degree day, I needed water like - SOON after seating. But no... As usual, it takes an inordinate amount of waiting just to get served a glass of water. About 10 minutes after being seated, we finally get water - but no waitress. Waiting... waiting... waiting... no waitress still - to take the expected usual drink order first. Nope. Waiting some more... and then finally... after 25 minutes after being seated, the dour, no personality, no 'greeting' waitress comes - to take our whole order. No drinks before din-din here again, per usual...
The food came nicely after we ordered. The Shumai came in about 10 minutes, and soon after we finished that, the pork Gyozo arrived. Good timing. Then a 15 minute wait for the sushi entrees for the kids and my chicken Katsu. All good.
Unfortunately, my daughter wanted to order the Crème Brûlée for dessert. Sounds nice, let's go for it. My mistake. THAT took about 25 minutes to receive. TWENTY FIVE MINUTES. We waited and waited... The kids didn't seem to mind, as they were talking about their favorite topic: Anime and games. Great. They're in it deep, while I'm just wanting to get out. But... wait for the Crème Brûlée we must. ...and wait ...and wait. I even asked the waitress, when it finally came, what took so long for the Brûlée? "The chefs are busy..." - straight out of the wait-staff handbook.
Avoid Hane if you expect normal, congenial, reasonable service. All...

Update 2020 back since reopen from covid. Very disappointed been there 2 times use to go there with my best friend who died from covid related symptoms 5 months ago. Anyway first time back. I chocked on something I was eating started coughing my partner asked owner lady for water cuz I couldn't talk. She said ok instead of getting me water right away she went to get menu for guess to take them to seat and went to check on other quess. That put me in a bad mood instantly. What if I had passed out on the floor like I couldn't believe it.
Second visit. After 20 min on waiting in my seat for a waitress I saw one came to take the order of someone they just seated. I got upset ready to go make a complain that's when she came to me asking if I'm ready. I look at her. Kept it cool and replied I been ready 20 min ago. Long story short she was mainly M.I.A the rest of my time there but I see her attending others she lucky I left her a tip just because of the place and im not mean but I was tempted not too leave any.
This is why I'm changing the stars...
Read moreHane Sushi on 1st ave and 20th street has been a frequent stable for me for the past 5 years. The servers are friendly and accommodating, the average sushi is presented beautifully, and they offer 2 for 1 drinks all the time. Tonight my experience was less then pleasant. There are 3 TVs in the restaurant and the one over the bar, that I was directly facing, was playing FOX news with Giuliani spewing lies that " election collusion is not a crime in this country" Which is absolutely false. In this current political climate, I don't feel it is appropriate for a restaurant, that is open to the public, to subject it's patrons to political rhetoric. No matter what your beliefs. I requested for the channel be changed because I found it offensive. That request was denied due to someone at the bar who requested it be on. This person was drinking and conversing with other patrons and not even watching it at all. I do believe in free speech and feel that it is up to the individual restaurant to decide what is appropriate in their establishment. I for one, will not be back to Hane...
