So I can't say whether or not this is the norm, but there were some things that I felt could've been handled a bit better. We were taking the Rockaway ferry, which had an absurdly long line, so not much choice other than to wait in it as opposed to leaving for a while and coming back. That's not generally an issue, but the day we were waiting, it was incredibly hot and the boat wasn't picking up for an hour. Having said that, we pretty much asked for that by continuing to wait, so I can't really blame the pier, but it would be nice if they could set up more protected areas if people need to wait that long.
Also, since we were the only two to get off at Brooklyn Army Terminal, only two others could get ON the boat to continue to the Rockaways, and there was quite a massive line there, so those poor people had to wait another hour (in the sun) to POSSIBLY get on the next ferry.
So, and I know this is part ferry review and part pier review, but if they want this to be a viable means of transport for anyone, they might have to increase the...
Read moreLove the NYC ferry service, especially traveling with a baby in a stroller. Only knocked a star off because the time to transfer from the Astoria ferry boat to the Far Rockaways line is very tight (5 mins). Fortunately I took an earlier ferry than needed to get to my destination on time, but I missed the transfer to the Far Rockaways boat by what must have been 30 seconds. A frequent commuter even kindly pointed out the slip I needed to go to - and I'm pretty sure the Astoria boat was on time or at least within a few minutes...oh well, at least it's not a bad place to wait for an hour, there is a small but very pretty waterfront park nearby and an indoor section with concession/coffee stand. If you're doing a fast transfer between Astoria and the Rockaways though - RUN (carefully) through the building - the slip is on the other side. I saw a few people do this while I waiting the hour. But staff were all nice, and the rides very pleasant, my...
