Ruthie’s Neighborhood Barber Shop — Local services in New York

I don’t write too many reviews, but I felt especially compelled to do so after my haircut tonight. For the past few months I’ve been particularly busy, and for the first night in awhile I had a free night on my hands.

I had no plans so I decided to stroll around the neighborhood to grab a bite to eat and get something to drink. On my walk I passed Ruthie’s shop. I noticed the light was still on even though it was getting close to 9pm. I knocked on the window to ask her hours and she said she could cut my hair right then if I wanted. Seeing as how I had nothing going on, I said yes and I’m so glad I did.

You can tell she cares about what she does and has a warm heart. She meets you on your level, treats you like a human - it shows she’s actually interested in talking with you. I’ve seen her shop dozens of times, and always thought it was super cute with all the trinkets in the window, but now I’m glad to know the person and story behind them. Oh and she’s also a talented carpenter.

If you need a haircut, don’t hesitate to give her a chance. Her cuts are very affordable and you really don’t meet too many people like her....

I’ve been seeing Ruthie since 2022 and have found her to be an excellent barber.

Unlike many barbers these days who rely too much on their clippers, Ruthie uses classic techniques and takes her time to get the details right. I have very thick hair, which means I used to get a lot of bad haircuts before finding Ruthie.

Even though she is among the best barbers I’ve ever had, she is also the cheapest barber in the neighborhood, with a full haircut for under $30.

Ruthie is walk-ins only and is open in the late afternoons and evenings on weekdays and Saturdays, which means it’s pretty easy to get a haircut any day you want. It’s best to call before you leave home to make sure she’s in, but you can also call the shop in the morning and listen to the voicemail (which she updates every day) to find out her exact hours for the day.

Also, I would be remiss if I did not mention that Ruthie is an incredibly warm and kind person, which you can read about in many of the other reviews...
