Was on vacation from Rhode Island and visited as many shops as I could. Actually tried to stay away from comic shops as I have a box "back home" at my local shop (Rah co-co's if you're ever in town). I had already vists the bigger shops (two mid towns, forbidden planet, kinokuniya, book off) and had amazing experiences so when my bf said "let's grab something to eat and go over there I said, why the heck not!
Bad service, pricing, and meh selection is why not. We didn't look too much into the bag thing. As first we were like, really? Mid-town, FP, Toy Tokyo down the street, etc. Have way more valuable stuff on display and don't ask that, but we just shrugged and said whatever. It was a bit unnerving that they were unattended near the open front door on the floor, but we had nothing in them essentially so it wouldn't be the end of the world if they were stolen. ...then we were followed. Again, Went to bigger stores with better stuff and weren't followed, but again we tried to shrug it off. ...then I saw the price on the mainstream, 5 dollars for one issue of a Dc or Marvel? Really? I didn't see the prices for my image usuals but they we're probably $5 dollars too. Lol, I'll just wait until I get home, thanks. $5-15 dollar difference From midtown and my local spot on figures too. Even kinokuniya is cheaper than this place! ...then I had to ask the woman who was following us and looking dead at me FOUR TIMES for help. Only for her to act like she didn't even know I was there (??? We locked eyes????) And have me repeat what I asked two more times and say "we don't have it."
The owner I think came up after that and I guess told her to stop following us, but my experience was already soured. I saw some indie finds that I'm gonna have my local shop order, waited for my boyfriend to get done...
Read moreMy friend had bought a statue as a gift for Christmas. When we got on the train to go home, we realized that the item was damaged. A piece of its ear was completely broken off. When we went back to the store to get his money back, because he felt like he didn't want to spend money on a damaged statue. The manager had refused to give him back the money, saying that he can only do store credit and told him to buy something else. Correct me if I'm wrong but if you sell a broken or damaged item, if the customer doesn't want it anymore you should return the money if its asked for back. No sense on spending money on a defective product. We could completely understand if he didn't want the item and wanted to swap it for something else but it was broken so he felt disappointed and disrespected. The manager made such a fuss about returning the money that he started yelling at us, which is extremely disturbing and unprofessional. After 20 minutes of going back and forth for no reason the manager finally decided to fund him back the money, but only because he knew he was in the wrong. Having experience in retail, this event was very poor customer service and was very disrespectful. On top of all that St. Mark's Comics is very cheap when it comes to buying items from customers. I myself had items worth trending online value going for $70, the manager that runs the store only wanted to give me $15. Its like they wanna steal products from customers know how much the items cost "lowball" you and then resell it at double or triple the value. Which is very wrong and unsettling. My advice, NEVER SHOP AT ST.MARKS COMICS. You will be disappointed and disrespected plus the staff is...
Read morePeople of color, don’t shop here. So, I’ve lived in bay ridge for 6 years with my wife and have been a regular in Industry City for 7 years. A comic book store would be a welcomed site but not this one. I came here when it first opened and got screamed at by the owner/manager (white dude with glasses) for having a drink in the shop (coffee). Granted, that’s reasonable. Just went their today and my cousin expressed hesitation towards going cause the aforementioned guy has followed him around multiple times (my cousin works in IC and visits frequently). This guy is busy sorting stuff and there are multiple people shopping, but he specifically walks up to us and asks “what’s going on fellas?” To which I answer I’m good (I was looking for Godzilla comics). He made a face at me, disappeared for a couple of minutes and came back. We walked to the front And noticed his two employees watching us and guarding the door. Anyways, they watched us as we continued to look at stuff. I wound up buying two Pokémon packs which were pretty cheap but at the same time I don’t appreciate being watched. I worked retail for a couple of years and I have to say people are pretty obvious when people of color walk into a shop. Want non racist shops? Go to midtown comics/galaxy comics for comics, Kunyakinya in midtown for manga and Japanese stuff or Dashop in Chinatown for affordable pokemon, magic, yugioh cards without being...
