Review of The Great Gatsby (2024)
This adaptation of The Great Gatsby is a bold and visually stunning take on F. Scott Fitzgeraldâs classic novel. The production fully embraces the extravagance of the Jazz Age, with dazzling costumes, opulent set designs, and an electrifying energy that captures the spirit of Gatsbyâs world.
The music is clearly a major focus, and while many people will love the immersive, almost operatic approach, I personally found the lack of spoken dialogue a bit frustrating. Nearly everything was sung, which made it feel more like an extended musical performance than a traditional adaptation of the novel. While the songs were well-executed and added to the grandeur, I sometimes wished for more moments of quiet or spoken conversation to balance the experience and let the emotional weight of the story settle.
That said, the performances were passionate, and the productionâs commitment to its vision is undeniable. If you enjoy musicals that fully commit to storytelling through song, this is an ambitious and unique interpretation of Gatsbyâs world. But if youâre hoping for a more traditional balance of dialogue and music, the constant singing might take some getting used...
Read moreThe show was beyond phenomenal BUT** (read to the end) Honestly was hoping for Harry Potter but my husband doesnât like anything HP. I wasnât very excited at first coming to this show but Iâm so glad we did. This is my first broadway show and wow the bar is in the sky after this performance. Everything about it from the acting to the singing to the visuals were all superb. The orchestra too. The one actor at the very end after everyone took a bowâŚ. was funny, charismatic, and made a GREAT PLEA for a donation but made a huge mistake. You should never make a DONATION âŚ.. politicalâŚ.. they basically said if you like Elon musk donât donate. It excluded possibly half of the audience and was a major turn off. Why would you end on THAT note when everything else was GREAT and fantastic. Iâm not political at all so bringing it up in a public forum was uncalled for. We didnât stick around to donate or meet the cast. Our visit to New York did not have ANY political encounters other than this. It was refreshing and would have been even more so if not for this comment. The comment made was âmaybe dump that Tesla stock you have and donate. We take all forms of paymentâ it was...
Read moreIt breaks my heart to give anything less than 5 stars.......this is my favorite book ever written. The musical and actors were phenomenal. The staff.......yikes. First, the man standing outside yelled for people to, "Follow directions and listen," as if he was my father......and then, throughout the show, the ushers would yell at people for having their phones out.......a female usher raised her voice at my companion and said she would get security if she took her phone out again......after receiving no warnings. They also walked up and down the aisles periodically scanning for phones like the FBI....it was incredibly distracting. I'm certain there are TONS of people looking for employment and each of them is replaceable, so do better. Working with the public requires you to know how to interact like a human being. It might be a better idea to tell people at the door NO PICTURES......if your rule is so serious that you'll threaten to remove people, you need to be EXPLICIT. Reach out if...
