The first part is a review; the second part is about overcoming my fear. Dr. Mahjoubi and her team removed two bottom partially impacted wisdom teeth for me under IV sedation. It was very well-done: I recovered well and had minimal pain (I took all the pain medications for the first 4-5 days). I also did not develop a dry socket. This is what I wrote a day after my surgery in the beginning of my review: ā Twenty-four hours have elapsed since my surgery and it must be strange for you to hear this from me: I felt as if I had not had the extraction! I did not feel any pain during and after the surgery.ā During the first week, I had some minor discomfort and a little swelling ā easily managed with pain medication. I started eating normally a week after the surgery and it is now the end of week 3. NOTE: everyone responds different; I am also an older patient (35), so that makes recovery slower than usual. Although this was my first dental surgery, I believe it is difficult to make the experience more pleasant. (No extraction is pleasant per se but I fully trust this dental office and will return to it if I must one day). OVERCOMING FEAR: I was, like many patients, scared. In fact, I ran away by cancelling my first scheduled surgery! I would like to share with you two things that helped me overcome my fear other than knowing that I am in good hands, which I too now can testify. First, I learned that the process of waiting for the operation is far worse than anything else during (under IV) and after it. So I thought: why keep on torturing myself by prolonging it, if waiting was the worst part? I spent many hours searching on the internet ā perhaps in hope of finding a miracle that would make the teeth disappear gradually. Trust me for my research skills (I have quite a few advanced degrees under my belt): as of 2019, there is no such cure. (There are indeed some cases where you donāt have to have your wisdom teeth extracted, but if you have spoken to a few dentists and they all persuade you to take them out ASAP, you most likely should.) Second, I watched a lot of Youtube videos and knew exact what they were going to do. It was scary imagining getting a cut on the gum. The truth is: any extraction is somewhat scary to imagine. But modern surgery is different from anticipating a cut on your arm without anesthesia! What I realized is that the question I should preoccupy myself with is not āhow will I handle that cutting,ā but ācan I handle that cut wound afterwards?ā In medieval times when there was no anesthesia, the first question must have been much more pertinent. But with IV sedation, the first question becomes irrelevant. So long as you believe you can handle a wound (which many of us have handled before), perhaps the only other thing one should worry is whether one would wake up during sedation or whether there would be any aftereffects: I didnāt have a lot of time to process that information, but (1) I woke up in the last minute of the operation when they were putting gauze pads on my wounds ā it was quite pleasant to witness the beginning and the end of my surgery; (2) I did not feel uncomfortable or dizzy at all ā in fact, I sent text messages on my watch within minutes after waking up; (3) I walked out and went home with no trouble; and (4) I did not feel any discomfort associated with the anesthesia. Nobody likes extractions and I have managed to evade mine for years. But life is full of challenges and I eventually just told myself to learn to deal with the unavoidable. And Iām glad I did...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreJanuary 2018 Initial wisdom teeth extraction Dr. Mahjoubi and her team are very professional and caring. I had all my five wisdom teeth extracted here - my case was very hard, but it was done nicely and the recovery was speedy. Dr. Mahjoubi prescribed everything I needed for recovery, from pain killers, to anti-inflammatory pills and antibiotics, even mouth wash. I didnāt have to worry about anything. Highly recommended!
Updated 6/28/18 Itās been 5 months since I had my surgery, unfortunately I didnāt heal properly (nothing to do with doctorās techniques) and a deep hole has formed at where my bottom left wisodom teeth was. I had several free follow up appointments with Dr. Mahjoubi and she suggested me to wait to see if it could heal by itself overtime.
While I was waiting for it to heal, I went to my normal dentist (the head of another practice) for a routine cleaning. I told the dentist about the hole and he immediately had me scheduled appointment with their own periodontist. Long story short, I ended up needing to pay almost $700 out of pocket if I decided to fix the problem with the periodontist, since my insurances have been exhausted from the wisdom teeth extractions earlier this year and heās out of network. I decided to go back to Dr.Mahjoubi (should have just stuck with her in the first place, but I kind of felt ālockedā at the other practice). I called Elizabeth yesterday and she gave me an appointment for today.
After brief examination, Dr.Mahjoubi told me sheās going to fix me TOMORROW for FREE (sheās only gonna take whatever left on my insurance, but I donāt have to pay any out of pocket). I was literally AMAZED by her kindness. She could have charged me a lot more like the other office, but she decided to work with my insurance situation. I am so glad I came back to her and I couldnāt thank her more.
Iām constantly impressed by how professional and kind Dr. Mahjoubi and her team is. Itās hard to find a practice like this in New York City where most places only cared about how much money they make. Sheās not only very skilled, but has a full heart caring for you, your health and your financial. I didnāt have to pay anything ever since my extraction: appointments, X-ray, and the umcoming secondary surgery and more to come. I always feel welcomed and relaxed at her place. The appointment waiting time is never more than 2-3 days.
This is hands down the best oral surgeonās office (probably the best medical practice Iāve ever been to). I would defiantly refer friends...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreāļøāļøāļøāļøāļø Compassionate and professional care when it matters most! Hi, my name is Chris, and I am a real person! I want to personally thank Dr. Mahjoubi, who is one of the kindest, and most professional medical providers Iāve ever met! I came to see her at her practice because I had a concerning issue with my upper palate (a swollen elongated growth ending in a painful sore leaking through whitish ooze , ew). Dr. Mahjoubiās maxillofacial assistants approached me with so much patience and attentiveness. I relaxed as I felt they were highly skilled, knew perfectly fine what they were doing and were being cordial. Dr. Mahjoubi carefully listened to me; then asked me to open my mouth so she could assess the situation. After checking the 3-D X rays again, she very calmly explained to me that the best way through was to perform a biopsy without delay before jumping to conclusions. It was most likely something not to worry about but still she wouldnāt want to take any chances. During the process, she and her assistant were so kind and calming, acknowledging my pain, giving me time to breath in and out, and never patronizing. What speaks volumes about her character is that Dr. Mahjoubi was taking some time off but even while on vacation, she personally called me to let me know that the results of my biopsy were benign. That call brought me such badly needed peace of mind. Equally, that level of excellence extends to each one of Dr. Mahjoubiās entire team: from the very friendly and accommodating front desk manager to the highly skilled and compassionate assistants, everyone was exceptionally warm, empathetic and courteous. The practice itself is equipped with impressive state-of-the-art technology and has a comforting, clean atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Iām beyond grateful for the care and compassion I received during such a difficult time. Thank you, Dr. Mahjoubi and your team; I really, really appreciate all your care! without delay, and her highly skilled ne X rays er patronizing, always kind and...
