Absolutely disgusted with 2nd & Charles' promotional policy for "A Penny per Page" day on Saturday 8/16/25.
I was an avid 2nd & Charles fan and have been a loyal customer for over 14 years; however, the current policies, practices, and customer service, as of late, have changed my once high opinion of this store.
I traveled over 1 hour from IL to IN to visit this specific location because I appreciate their well-stocked graphic novel section. In the last 3 years, I've observed a steep increase in prices, especially for graphic novel books that are over 5-10 years old from their original publishing price being marked as their original price rather than a discounted sale for an older/used book. I digress, my problem stems from my visit at 2nd & Charles for the penny per page promotion. Upon collecting a total of 5 used books as were permitted by the sale and waiting in the extensive line for 15 minutes with only 3 employees managing the front was met with animosity when the employee observed my stack of books and stated that they must have page numbers in order to count towards the sales. I explained that graphic novels, specifically those listed with DC comics or Marvel notoriously don't include page numbers and that graphic novels were not excluded by the sale-only comics. The employee went to get his manager who held firm to the statement that the graphic novels had to have page numbers to have the sale applied. I stated that the page numbers were located online for all graphic novels present on Amazon and that they should be applied since the original policy said nothing about graphic novels being excluded from this sale-, only comics and there is a significant difference between the 2 forms of media. I asked if I could leave a formal complaint regarding this discriminatory book policy and the woman went to get her manager who agreed with the policy, refused to make any accommodation regarding the page numbers that could be located online via Amazon, and left it at that rudely stating that there have been "some" Manga & Graphic Novels that were applied to the sale. I am thoroughly disgusted with the false advertising that 2nd & Charles decided to provide for this sale and their discriminatory practices regarding graphic novels when they were not listed as a specific exclusionary item. Needless to say, I shall not be frequenting this store or the 2nd & Charles franchise in the future.
Their discounts are few & far between, their digital app is an inccessible nightmare in regards to not being ADA compliant and their storefront locations are too narrow to fit a wheelchair or accompanying service animal through the cluttered book table aisles (or fire rescue/emergency services if such a need were to be required.), in addition, there is no place for any individual to sit while evaluating their purchases.
It's a shame to see this once cherished store fall from grace but their inaccessible, non-ADA compliant storefront and discretionary/arbitrary book sale practices need to be addressed. I have a service dog, but there is NO way that I can allow him to come into this store with the multiple issues associated with non-compliant ADA factors noted.
Graphic Novel/DC/Marvel/Manga customers beware of all future discretionary 2nd & Charles promotions.
I will not be visiting 2nd & Charles anytime in the near future and would implore 2nd & Charles to resolve their storefront and...
Read moreThis store was our absolute go to for birthdays and Christmas gifts for our pals. I'm now incredibly excited to support the new business Barnes and Noble opening up down the street when they open.
Due to financial constraints we tried to sell some movies to help us out on some grocery money. A full box set of three Lord of the Rings DVDs is worth $80—100 on Amazon. Thinking about how we have never had problems with this store before and avoid worrying about shipping, we brought these and an entire bag of DVDs in to be appraised. We were offered for EVERYTHING less than $7 cash or $14 dollars in store credit.
The person processing our order told my husband it'd take at least a day, so when we left them there on Saturday we didn't expect anything to be said until Sunday at the earliest, so we didn't come in on Sunday. Apparently that was a mistake because when they made the offer over the phone on Saturday and offered almost nothing for our items they didn't say we had to come in within 24 hours or close on Sunday.
So despite saying no thank you on Saturday, they sold our items on Sunday without a call or alerting us if we didn't come in Sunday this would happen.
So my husband goes in with his ticket to pick everything up and gets the lovely surprise of all of our items already ticketed on the shelves. The lord of the rings sets, being sold for double our ENTIRE in store credit amount offer.
We learned that only Adriana Rivera, the general manager could do anything at all about this and that she leaves earlier in the day so if you come in after a 9-5p chances are you probably can't talk to anyone about your items being stolen and resold.
So she gives us the "it's our word vs her employee who's never done anything like this before in his six months of employment here" , and insuates we're liars. And have no proof. So, to keep her job, she doesn't have the power to return our items, but she'll sell the three DVDs back to us for 50% off when we shouldn't pay a thing because we refused the store credit every single time it was offered but it was "applied to our driver's license anyway". So we payed two dollars for items we refused to sell to make sure no one else bought them. And that's two dollars out of our own pocket after the entire store credit was applied.
So, they got a bag full of movies including 8 seasons of a Scrubs TV series with over a 50% up sell for completely free and we pay two dollars for three out of the full bag of movies we didn't want to sell for the extremely low ball price they offered to begin with.
I severely hope your profits make up for the easily $150 dollars we've spent here every year alone that we no longer will be spending there on top of telling every person we know this place will rob you and then sell your items right back to you.
I'd avoid this place like the plague. I sincerely hope everyone reading this knows that this place will be happy to rob you to and sell your stolen items back to you at half price to keep a cooperate greed policy. The fact that the employees and these reviews recognize this happens all the time and won't change their policy or at least inform their buyers during the phone offer of their policy, suggests this place won't be...
Read moreCompletely amazed at how we were treated in this store today. Walked in and spoke with tommy in buybacks, super swell dude. Was polite and working hard. I brought in comics and 2 instruments. Tommy said his manager would have to look over the instruments and that their would be a bit of a wait. No problem. I had a few comics that he looked over as we waited for the manager. The rest of the staff at this location was more focused on the blue haired managers newly dyed roots. For 45 minutes, my self, my wife and 2 children stood waiting (mind you we did browse the store twice over) as tommy ran from left to right answering calls and going through the items I brought, to fetching specific books for a customer, as the blue haired manager walked talked and giggled its way( sorry dont know what pronoun they went by and dont want to offend he/she) to the back of the store. A quick glance is what my instruments( a saxophone and trumpet) received from this manager. About an hour in, after watching the manger literally not look at my stuff, must have texted tommy something. Tommy comes up to us and says my manager says we can't take the instruments. With no explanation. I even asked why not and Tommy said I have no clue and proceeded to give me my appraisal for everything else. This ruined my first experience with you guys. For a retail manager to care more about socializing with future employees and discussing hair dye with a coworker than thoroughly assessing potential merchandise, assiting with calls on the store phone, or simply put just actually looking at my stuff before he/she said no is pathetic. I really liked your store and the merchandise you had to offer, but I'd go to a pawnshop in the ghettos of Chicago,IL or Gary,IN before I step foot into this...
