I don't usually write reviews. I USE them like crazy (Google, Yell, Amazon, etc) but always forget or find an excuse not to add to the community of reviews. But for a place/program like this, I couldn't resist.
+The Workout I've tried an array of gyms/workouts throughout the years: standard big name club membership gyms, crossfit boxes, seal team group workouts, similar mainstream fitness companies that use the heart rate theory, etc. While some I really enjoyed (cross fit), others left me tired but not all that inspired to make it on a consistent basis. None, however, compare to the level of motivation and drive I have waking up at the crack of dawn just so I can get my fix of Aussie fitness for the day. You won't find yourself running a treadmill for half the class, but you will be smoked by the end of every class. Each class is different, built around different themed days and target muscle groups, but one thing is constant: a great damn workout.
Disclaimer: it is not Crossfit, and never claims to be. If you are looking to Olympic style lift and set PRs, this place is not for you. When asked by my friends though, the easiest way to describe it for me is as "a lighter crossfit." Your heartrate soars, you're dripping sweat, working box jumps and plyrometric moves, pushing sleds, hitting deep squats, and everything in between. Again, you're not throwing massive weights over your head or doing endless kipping pull-ups. But if you're like me, your workout goals don't necessarily revolve around setting a lifting PR each day. I really enjoyed my years crossfitting, but after doing F45, there's no going back.
The Cost I wouldn't be giving a fair review if I didn't acknowledge the one drawback: the cost. But it comes with a caveat. It's pricey. It is. Compared to a standard flat rate general gym membership it's going to seem outrageous. But when compared to what you pay elsewhere for anything other than a generic gym membership, it is no different. Whether it's F45, yoga studios, crossfit boxes, or any other great workout program, you are going to pay a bit to get pushed to your max. Personalized training isn't cheap. But if you can find other splurge areas to cut back in order to fund it, you won't regret it.
+The Atmosphere A huge aspect of any gym is the people, both the coaches and those attending the classes. The coaches are second to none. Whether it's the local trainers or the Aussies who Luke and Evan (the owners and head trainers) have recruited to join the La Jolla team, every coach wants to be there and wants you to reach new bests. Similarily, everyone who attends want you to succeed as well. After every class you'll find sweaty and exhausted people high-fiving each other for a great workout. Everyone puts out for 45 minutes and everyone's pushing each other to get the most out of each workout. The pumping music that can be heard out of the doors only helps to add to the incredible energy in the room. It's an extremely inclusive group, welcoming all new comers who quickly turn into daily regulars.
++The Aussies F45 is a international brand that has pushed from Australia to the US and has caught on fire since. The company seems like a great one to work for and is always is adapting workouts and improving upon past successes. I know I be happy with any F45 I'd walk in to. But what sets this gym above the other F45s in the area are Luke and Evan. Whatever I write won't do these guys justice. At first glance, you'd think they are yoked rugby players that can crush a workout. And you wouldn't be wrong. But more than that, they are the most welcoming, humble, motivating, and just generally great dudes you'll meet. They've built this place from day one around a great workout program, a great vibe, and a community of people that want to train hard. And they've done that and then some.
I cannot say better things about this place. Give it a chance. Take the one week free challenge. It will no doubt be your first...
Read more5 stars is far too few for F45 La Jolla. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 3 decades, have coached and managed, and probably have ridiculous expectations of gyms. This place exceeded my expectations.
It all started virtually when quarantine hit. I contacted several gyms to inquire about Tru Coach or Zoom workouts. La Jolla was the only one that responded immediately. I joined and the virtual coaching was fantastic, so much so that when businesses opened up, I was willing to drive from Encinitas to attend classes in downtown LJ. for live classes. The in-house customer service and management was the best I’ve ever experienced (they remembered my name after day one). Even better, I can’t say enough about the fantastic coaching. Unreal. Check out a class coached by Matt Bauman and you’ll be hooked.
If you’re reading this you’re most likely looking for a gym. This is the place to go. BTW, I NEVER write reviews. That’s how outstanding my...
Read moreI signed up for the 8 week challenge and to be honest, I was a big time skeptic going in to F45. I'm fairly experienced in terms of fitness and exercise and in pretty good shape but It seemed like unnecessarily high impact and I wasn't looking for a workout that would end up with me in a doctor's office or in physical therapy. After about a week I loved the energy. The staff is awesome - everyone is extremely knowledgable, helpful and make it lighthearted environment. By the end of the first week I was modifying the workout enough to make it challenging, fun, enjoyable and most importantly for me safe. If you are dealing with any nagging injuries the staff is fantastic at giving you alternative exercises. The Saturday One -Hour Hollywood class is by far my favorite and the most challenging workout. Definitely will continue to incorporate their high intensity training into my...
