Came here for a weekly brunch after seeing the good menu and aesthetic vibe and it totally lived up!
The place is super pretty with all the green leaves and decor and just makes you feel all pretty as well. We wanted a table for two at prime Branch hours: 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. We only have to wait about 10 or 15 minutes which was amazing. The downside is that we got a table on the inside because the wait for the table outside was too long. No issues though.
They also go to the Pain o Chocolat on the house. I think they were giving these two a couple of tables inside. We had it at home and it was really nice. The chocolate was rich and pastry was so fresh and buttery and flaky! My husband was only going to have half of it (reheated in the air fryer) but ended up going for that second half as well. Good sign!
We got the Cupcake Latte (espresso, cupcake syrup, whipped cream, magical marshmallows, edible glitter) and it was so pretty! Like an actual cupcake. Flavor was good too!
Also got the Farmers Salad (greens, radish, chicken, goat cheese, corn, cucumbers, avocado, poblano honey dressing)to share. The dressing on this was really amazing! That side to the sweet and I don't know what, but it went well together. Portion size of chicken here was massive. That really was a lot. And a lot of the rest of the add-ons like corn and cucumber as We ended up finishing most of the greens without even finishing the toppings. Haha
For the main I got the California Skillet on Greens instead of roasted potatoes. (egg whites, roasted chicken, parmesan cheese, micro cilantro, no tomato). This was a really good call. My husband got the naughty skillet with potatoes and the potatoes were really a lot. The greens was a good call. The amount of chicken here was real good too. I think the flavor would have been a little plain on its own so I added Sriracha and Boom;SO good.
My husband got the Naughty Skillet (roasted potatoes, irish white cheddar, bbq beef, two eggs, spicy sriracha hollandaise) and loved it. Eggs were perfect Sunny side up, The hollandaise sauce had a good kick, and so did the beef. Even the beef on its own was amazing. Overall everything had really really strong and good flavors. Only downside was that there was really a lot of potatoes in there, and big ones. He didn't finish them all.
For dessert we got the Honeyed Berry Toast (whipped honey goat cheese & blue spirulina with blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, pomegranate seeds on top, AND micro mint, honey, micro orchids. Poached egg on the side). The combination was surprisingly good! I'm not a berry person so took most of the berries off, but that honey goat cheese & blue spirulina thing on the bread itself was lovely. Not sure what the poached egg was for so we didn't really...
Read moreI have to wonder about some of the negative reviews and where those people are from. We've been visiting La Jolla at least once a year for 25 years, and Sugar and Scribe is the best breakfast we've found. We ate there two days in a row after finding it, and I wish I could have gone a third day!
The food is excellent. There are many places that serve flavorless eggs, but the S&S eggs were flavorful and came in a good portion (don't expect Wisconsin-sized portions, as no one actually needs that much food!). The pancakes (Blueberry and Lemon Curd) needed no syrup. The lemon curd (on the side) is my second favorite, only to my wife's (Sorry, Maeve!).
The service on Day 1 was better than on Day 2, but it was not bad. I have a hard time judging servers as harshly as I did five years ago, since the work ethic of many younger people has deteriorated. One restaurant in Del Mar had a "Seat Yourself" sign, even though they accepted reservations that night. The hostess chose to ghost the place, leaving no one to seat the guests and attend to reservations.
ATMOSPHERE: They offer both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The music playing was at a nice volume and was louder inside than outside. On Day 1, we were seated outside next to a table of 8, including two young children and a child in a high chair. The parents clearly thought that whatever behavior their kids wanted to display was acceptable and desired by everyone. We asked to be moved inside, and they accommodated us. On Day 2, we were outside, and the morning air in La Jolla added to the experience.
VALUE: La Jolla is pricey. Expect it. We didn't think S & S was overpriced, and the value was more than the price. We live in Redding, which is a great restaurant desert and just as pricey as La Jolla. Comparing the two cities and their food quality and prices makes S & S inexpensive.
The overall experience at S & S is one I would put against any other breakfast or brunch spot. My only hope is that they remain open for as long as we make the trip downstate to La Jolla!...
Read moreMy family and I arrived for brunch at Sugar and scribe today and I must admit that the amazing reviews are warranted. We opted for an indoor table because the weather was a little windy, and I am glad that we did. The decor and atmosphere was just the right amount of cozy and laid back, yet inviting. The food was delicious, let me tell you what we ordered. I opted for the Southern love dish substituting the toast for a pancake, while my husband went for the Banana bread French toast and our son(8yrs old) went for the strawberry pancakes with roasted chicken on the side. For drinks we had the chocolate milk (of course), the turmeric ginger latte, and the Cupcake latte. While all of the dishes were extremely tasty. The pancakes were exceptional! They were so soft, and moist with just the right amount of sweetness with a crisp rim. I would buy their packaged batter in a heartbeat that's how much I enjoyed it. The grits...listen my family is from NYC and NC they would be very proud of whoever made those cheesy grits. Just yum!!!! My husband and son finished their plates so that explains how much they enjoyed it. Now on to the lattes. I take my lattes very seriously and so does Sugar and scribe because I had not one complaint except that I was full faster than I would have liked to have been. We were able to find parking as soon as we arrived, but I was informed that sometimes it can be a hassle. Last but not least the service was exceptional. We didn't feel rushed and as soon as we were out of water or looked as though we were finished with a plate the staff was on top of it.
If my review hasn't expressed my feelings by now, let me bluntly state that this bakery is a breath of deliciously seasoned fresh air and I am so glad that we live less than 20 minutes away lol.
This is how food should be done, so I recommend it ten times over.
Oh, I almost forgot! They close at 230pm so come early and on an...
