I remember being young and working on THE HILL and thinking I was the coolest ever. I wasn’t. I was a shop clerk. But, I worked on THE HILL. But, since I worked in THE HILL I was happy about it. I felt lucky so I was kind to customers. I never laughed at them and spoke I’ll of them so loud it could be hear at the back of the store. But the employees at this store seem to suffer from low self esteem. Or just plain old meanness. I’m not sure what sparked this cruelty but I hope they clean up their act. Travel, maybe (but keep your mouths closed). Take a class. Find out if your personality has more to offer than cruelty. Should be one star but the pudding is excellent.

Big city living means big city obstacles to daily sanity, such as the nearest full service grocery store being dozens (or wayyyyy more!!) of blocks away. Capitol Hill has been blessed to have an intermediary located in the vibrant heart of city life, the iconic landmark City Market for well over 30 years! DON'T MISS THE FAMOUS HAND DRAWN DAILY SKETCH OUT FRONT AS YOU ENTER!! They have reached legendary status amongst the true locals round these parts! BEST HOT DELI IN DOWNTOWN!

tl;dr: Food safety standards do not seem to apply to the night crew.

I live right next to City Market. I have been a regular for the past four plus years as I personally wanted to support them. But after the past couple of times I have been there I no longer can and I have filed a complaint with the city food protection office. Here's why:

If you get their fried chicken get it during the day and not at night time. The cook at nighttime does not adhere to food safety standards.

Three times upon getting food from their deli during the night shift I have gotten ill immediately after eating the food. I am thinking this is because they do not change the oil for long periods at a time.

Upon the third time this happened I brought it up with the manager to tell him that their oil may be rancid and they may need to change it. I was blown off.

I again gave them another chance today.

I went in today to get some ground beef (wanted taco's but didn't want to head to QFC as I was being lazy) . I purchased the ground beef, upon going home I saw it had a USE/Sell or freeze by date of 04/28/2018. I went back in and brought it to the attention of the clerk, the same one as before. Upon informing him that this beef was likely rancid I again was blown off and they offered for me to replace it with another ground beef they had available. Upon looking for an alternative one I discovered that all the ground beef they are selling has the same use/sell or freeze by date. The beef was completely unfrozen and I had seen it there for awhile. So I went home and opened the ground beef to give it the smell test. Again my suspicions were confirmed, the beef was rancid.

I have had enough so I filed a complaint, hopefully this can get them in order as I really do like going there. If the night crew held higher standards towards peoples safety when it comes to food it would get five stars no question. Until then I am...

Got second hand pepper sprayed by one of the employees - still feeling issues 3 days later. Was here last Saturday evening around 7:15pm and two customers were arguing with each other. The first customer was asking the second to leave and threatened to call the police. The second customer was being snarky and employee asked him to leave the building. During this time, one employee called me over to the register to pay for my things. Both customers were standing about 6-7 feet apart from each other and neither of them made any physical threats, and did not make any physically threatening gestures. After I finished paying, a second employee ran to the second customer, kicked him, then retreated and pepper sprayed him 2-4 times from about 5 feet away. This was indoors with no ventilation and near myself, other employees, and other customers. I want to be clear that while the customer was being rude and difficult, there was no indication that he posed a physical threat to anyone's safety. I work on Olive way, I understand the dynamics and have dealt with more than my fair share of belligerent and aggressive patrons. There is no excuse for assaulting a customer and putting other customers at risk just because someone refuses to leave when asked, not only is it immoral but it's illegal to use a self defense weapon unless you feel a threat to your physical safety. Because the employee peppersprayed the customer in the doorway there was no way to exit the building without walking through residual spray in the air. I'm still experiencing symptoms from the pepper spray that I inhaled - and while the woman who checked me out was sympathetic, the trigger-happy pepper spray employee had the audacity to lecture me for not getting out of the way (I was given...

The mini food mart side is open from 6Am to 1:50AM, 365 days of the week. I have never seen them closed in over 35 years except once when the power was out for 2r hours. The staff at City Market are always helpful. Care about the community. Stock lots and lots of items. Prices are a bit higher than Grocery store but they have a wider selection than most mini marts. The Deli will make any sandwich you want, they always have Been and Beef Burritos, Joe Joe fries, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken fingers and fried chicken in the hot counter. The cooler has cakes, deserts, boiled eggs, cold sandwiches, take n bake pizzas and salads all made in the deli. They also have vegan sandwiches and other items from Hill Side Quicky. They have a small fresh fruit and vegetable area. A small selection of video DVDs for sale but not for rent any more. They have parking for about 10 cars. They have a londromate next door that is open from 10AM to 9PM. (Small load is $3.75 wash/ $0.25 cents per 10 min to dry). The londromate is always clean, machines work, give you clean clothes, they have tiny boxes of detergent and dryers sheets for $1.00. They have a drop off laundry service where someone else will wash and fold your laundry from 11 am to 5PM. They have a change machine that takes $1, 5, 10 and $20 dollar bills. If a machine takes your money without wash and no attendent is on duty just go to the mini mart and they...
