In November 2023, I was spending Thanksgiving with my son in Seattle. I was living in Spokane, but over the last few years my daughter had died of #SUDEP - Sudden Unexpected Death in EPilepsy - 10 days before her May 1, 30th birthday. Shortly thereafter, my mother died & a year later, my husband of 40 years died.
I had been required to leave the apartment I shared with my husband & didn't know where to go. I was sleeping in a Facebook friend's trailer, but we had just reached an impasse and I had to move.
A friend of my late daughter's lived at Nickelsville Northlake & I called her while I was in town. That was when I learned they had an opening at Northlake. I applied for a spot in a Tiny House & when I was back in Spokane (I returned after interviewing for the home).
Pretty quickly, I found out I had been accepted. Life at Northlake was good for me. I liked the responsibilities that residents had to carry out & I enjoyed the people.
Christian helped me look for an apartment &, in the meantime, he helped me after I was hospitalized at UWMC for over a month when I was diagnosed with Heart Failure, AFib, and Kidney Disease. Upon leaving the hospital, I was prescribed a walker & Christian helped me get it as well as dealing with issues when the firm that I got the walker from, gave me a walker that fell apart in a month.
I enjoyed the work the community was doing as they built a new kitchen to replace the inadequate one they were using.
With Christian's invaluable assistance, I moved into a studio apartment on Capitol Hill on October 7, 2024 (a year ago - today is 10/26/25). Nickelsville paid my first & last month's rent, moving expenses, fees, etc., for the application process.
Finding myself homeless in my 70's was starting, but with the help of Nickelsville, I finally landed on my feet. I do not know what might have happened to me if I hadn't had the good fortune of connecting with people at Nickelsville. I promised I would volunteer when I left, but my health has hindered that. I still would like to find a way to do so as I know there are many more people to help.
Thanks...
Read moreI'm grateful to find a supportive, drug free, community orientated homeless shelter to live at. I just moved here from florida and lost my job after a month after I demanded reasonable pay(I wanted more than $100/day for working from 6:30am - 1am everyday). I worked craigslist gigs and paid about $150/day at hotels for 2 weeks before I decided I am going to look for an actual job. I found one in seattle and needed a place to stay. I called them and they scheduled a meeting. Not to long after I was approved to join the community and I am very grateful. Everyone here has been nothing but nice and accommodating and I try my best to contribute whatever needs to be done to make sure the community continues and thrives so it can help others who need help as well. Please consider supporting this community. It is run democratically and actually cares about the people there and is not just some government run facility turning people out and back into the street. Thank you to everyone at Nickelsville and...
