Chesapeake Bay Outfitters — Local services in St. Michaels

I wanted to love this store, but I was sadly disappointed. I specifically drove the 90 minutes to St Michael’s to visit Chesapeake Bay Outfitters after reading about it in a local MD blog.

My toddler and I visited today but after the way we were treated by the staff, I highly doubt we will be back. My toddler was babbling to herself in the stroller next to me while I was looking at the (very small) children’s section. The associate came over and didn’t even acknowledge I was standing there, she asked my daughter if she was “making all that noise”. My daughter is very wary of strangers so she immediately put her head down. The associate had the audacity to say “oh, she’s cute but she’d be cuter if she smiled” and scoffed at us. I brushed off the comment and we headed out of the store but the associate followed behind and just about blocked us from heading out the door. After a few awkward moments she moved so we could leave.

I don’t know if she thought we were shoplifting, or what the issue was, but I certainly didn’t appreciate someone nearly insulting my 2 year old or blocking us from exiting the store.

The products in store seemed lovely. It was a lot of Tommy Bahama type clothing, not necessarily the type of shirts I was looking for, for my kids.

Update (after business response): I am not sure how making a rude comment about a literal toddler could be “misinterpreted or misunderstood” but that’s neither here nor there. As far as not addressing it with management at the time - the other two associates are chatting amongst each other. Also, reading past reviews, the amount of reviews regarding less-than-friendly staff outnumber positive reviews. The snarky staff here ruin this store, which is a real shame. We picked up a shirt, prepared to pay full price for it (wasn't on sale though many racks were) and we asked if any other shirts by this brand were on sale elsewhere in the store. The response we recieved was a look up and down and "were any other shirts marked? No? Then no" in a very nasty tone. So sorry that patrons finding brands they liked in your store was such an imposition?? As others have noted- everything in this store can be bought online and without the attitude. When I shared my experience with my mother- expecting her to be shocked- she laughed and said this is typical behavior which is why she hasnt shopped there in years- since they tried to fight her on the same day exchange of an item that was KNOWINGLY sold to her with missing pieces. Nice selection, good quality, and helpful staff. My wife and I both like this store a lot and stop by when we are in town. - Update: We were just recently in St Michaels and stopped in the store a couple of times. Very friendly and helpful staff and a good selection of locally oriented merchandise and casual wear. We always find some nice things there.
