If I were to be forced to choose only one word to describe Fridayâs 4:30-8:30 porgy trip on the Celtic Quest, the most fitting word would be LUDICROUS! Thankfully, Iâm able to expand a little bit here in this forum. Capt. Mark was at the helm, leading us out into a tranquil Long Island Sound, where the wind was kicking a bit out of the Southwest, but fishing only a few hundred yards off shore, we werenât knocked around at all. After a decent steam, we set up for the first drop along a nice piece of bottom, with the fish finder absolutely lit up! Only problem was, these miniature marine warriors we call porgies werenât hungry. This drop and the next drop only yielded about 2 dozen scup, and there were rumblings among the crowd that we were in for a long trip. Not if Capt. Mark had anything to say about that! We headed back West, and in 15 minutes or so, Mark had us set up for the third (and what turned out to be the final) drop. Within 5 seconds of my bait reaching the strike zone, BANG! This was quickly followed up by BANG BANG BANG BANG! We were into the fish, and they were gorging themselves like it was Thanksgiving. Alex, the first mate, had started filleting me and my fatherâs overflowing tub at about 7. When she walked past again at about 8, and saw another overflowing bucket, I got a wry look of âreally guy?â (all in fun of course). There were a few first time fishermen on this summer solstice voyage, and they were hooking up with doubleheaders and really enjoying their time. I spent the last half hour of this insanity helping the young kids at the rails perfect their strikes and fill their buckets. All the mates were incredible, their service was impeccable, and their knowledge was invaluable. Big thanks go out to the whole crew for working their butts off to fillet hundreds and hundreds of fish before we arrived back at the dock. If you find yourself in need of some soul-cleansing time on the water, take yourself and your family down to the Celtic Quest in Port Jeff; youâll be sure to go home as...
Read moreI have been on a few fishing charters and this one was hands down my favorite! Originally had a date but due to weather we were quickly rescheduled for the next weekend by Susan! She was very nice and explained the options thoroughly. We decided to move it to the next weekend in hopes that the weather wouldnât trip us up again.
The day arrives (9/26/2020) and our party of 3 were excited to get on board. The boarding process was smooth and each party was adequately spaced out. Everyone had on face coverings and the boat was very clean. Hand sanitizer was available for us to use although we did bring our own.
As for the fishing - it was AWESOME! The captain had to move us from our first spot but once we were settled we were catching them left and right. Mostly porgy (scup), keeper Sea bass, and a Lemon Shark [released]! We were pulling them in faster than we could get the rods back out! Ended up with a ton of fish and the crew was super helpful in getting them on board and making sure our bait was stocked. They even cleaned and gutted all our fish.
We are already planning our next trip and canât wait to go out! Hopefully our luck strikes again but fishing is always different each time so donât be discouraged!
Huge Thanks to the entire Celtic Quest Team and especially our Captain and deckhands! You guys rock!
Highly recommend...
