A Breach of Trust Disguised as Hospitality My visit to Home Kingdom was marked by misleading signage, dismissive treatment, and a concerning absence of basic respect. The store displays a prominent American Express welcome sign, yet when I attempted to pay with Amex, the owner scoffed and said, “Didn’t you read the sign?” I replied, “Why would I? You have an Amex logo right there.” She pointed to a hastily taped-over Mastercard logo, an attempt at correction that borders on false advertising—or at the very least, deceptive practice. Already wearing the elastic bracelets I intended to purchase (which are difficult to remove without breaking), I explained I needed to grab my wallet from my truck and asked if I could return to pay. Rather than responding with basic decency, she replied coldly, “I don’t know you.” I said, “And now I don’t trust you either—see how that works?” I left my phone as collateral, returned quickly, and paid in cash. To top it all off, the irony of a large sign near the entrance reading “Remember, as far as anyone knows, we’re a nice normal family” was not lost on me. It’s hard to laugh when that kind of messaging is used to cover for behavior that is, frankly, the opposite. A curated facade can only hide so much—what’s beneath matters more. This was my first and final visit. Trust, once broken, is not easily repaired—and Home Kingdom made no effort to try.

This was the last gift shop I stopped at on my tour of Port Jefferson on May 2. They had by far the most unique items out of the other gift shops in the area. I got a cool shark shaped mat for my room and a sculpture of an octopus for my shelf. The female owner was very kind in answering my questions about her cute little store. They’ve been open for many years and they have things you won’t find anywhere else.

I purchased a beautiful lighthouse from Home Kingdom. The owners were extremely accommodating and helpful with the selection for my particular space. It looks fabulous and is very well made. I was more than happy with everything about the service I received. They have other really great merchandise in the store and I will be back for gifts! Highly recommend!

Extremely rude shop owners. My fiance was Pokémon hunting as we shopped in Port Jefferson, so he had his phone out and the game open when we walked in. We were 3 feet into the store and the owner came out from behind the counter and yells at him to put Pokémon away. She never even attempted to ask him nicely. And so we started discussing what had just happened when the other owner rudely interrupts us and basically tells him to leave the store. I looked around for another minute, and as I was leaving, I mumbled about lost sales and the 2nd owner literally followed me outside and yells, "I don't need your business anyway!"... I've never been so baffled by an interaction with store owners before! To take that attitude with grown adults and possible business is terrible. We literally wouldn't have had a single issue if they had asked nicely from the get-go. Never...

Incredibly rude and short-tempered owners. After my experience in this shop for 5 minutes, I can confidently say I will never return back.

I took a picture of a sign they had to send to my friend who is from LI. My parents and I were then bombarded with a VERY rude man ridiculing us because I had taken a photo, instead of calmly telling us there is no photo taking in the store. Insanely uncalled for. Then I stepped out and tried to go back in, and he stood in the doorway and immaturely blocked me from going in because “I just wanted to take pictures”.

I do not support such awful customer service...
