I had no idea installing a home generator was so much work. The first hurtle was obtaining a variance due to the requirements of my location. The HPS salesman, Jeff, predicted we would need a variance due to his knowledge of the unique requirements of my neighborhood. What I didn’t comprehend was the approval process would take nearly 6-months. What I did come to appreciate was the approval process would have been longer if it were not for the tireless efforts of Jeff to shepherd the governmental approval process along. I am not sure how many hours were put in by Jeff to get this approved, including multiple nights in governmental review board meetings, but I would not be surprised if it added up to 4 to 5 full-days of work. I now understand why so many people complain about red tape!
I also had no idea how much work was involved in installing the generator. A rough summary of the steps required is as follows:
Prep the site for the generator itself by digging a hole, filling it with gravel, add a base and finally haul the heavy generator to the site. Dig a 100 feet-long trench through the froze earth from the generator to the house near the gas meter and fill it with both the electrical and gas lines. The materials for these lines alone are in the range of $2,000. Disconnect the gas line to the house and add the appropriate piping to splice the house and generator together. Later relight all household gas appliances. Disconnect the mains electrical supply, install switching technology to sense power failures and light the generator when needed. Reconnect mains and test switching technology. Repair trench damage to lawn. Meet with town and utility inspectors to obtain approval to activate the system. Teach homeowner on how to use system and activate it.
The weather on the day of installation was overcast with light snow and a temperature of 15ºF. I thought the installers would cancel due to the temperature, but Jeff, Radcliff, Brandon, Tim and Dom arrived on time and were ready to go. I mentioned on their arrival that maybe it was going to be too cold for them, but they powered through their work and never once complained about the weather. They were friendly and professional in every way. They instilled great confidence in their work and the quality of the system they installed. I think they were done around 2 to 3 PM, which amounts to around 7 hours of work for a team of 5. My final impression was the price charged for the complete system was incredibly reasonable considering the magnitude of work and the number of skilled tradesmen and equipment needed. As I said at the start, I had no idea just how much work and materials are needed for a quality installation of a quality product.
I would really like to thank everyone at Home Power Systems that helped us with the...
Read moreUPDATE April 23, 2024: Just had my second Generac full house generator installed. New home, needed a new generator. Called HPS - they are the best. Once again had a first class team. From initial site survey, through installation of generator/electrical/gas, to final checkout, the team was great. I expected nothing less and they delivered. Only took about 4 hours to do the entire job. My new 18kw generator is now providing standby support at my new house. Thanks again and once more 5 stars to HPS.
I had a new Generac home generator installed yesterday (2 Apr 2021). All I can say is Wow! The Home Power Systems sales rep, project manager, and installation team all were absolutely great. I had obtained several estimates from other sellers and settled on one last October. However, they were unable to obtain the generator to install. The Generac factory was way behind (Covid, of course) and would not be able to ship my generator until Feb or early Mar. When that time came and I still had no firm install date I was starting to worry a bit. Then I saw the HPS advertisement on TV so I decided to give them a try. I dropped an email to HPS at about 4:00 on a Friday afternoon. By 5:00 I had a response. Rory told me they had 45 generators in stock in their local warehouse and would love to sell me one. On the following Monday Ken came to my house and did a complete survey of what needed to be done, what size generator would be needed, what permits and RG&E gas meter changes would be needed, etc. I was impressed! And their price was as good as or better than other estimates I had received. So, I cancelled the deal with my previous contractor (still waiting and unable to deliver the generator) and went with HPS. They did everything necessary and had their delivery and install crew show up less than three weeks later. The crew (Mark, Turbo, Alex and Isaac) was great. Very professional. Extremely courteous. They sited the new generator, made the electrical and gas line changes necessary and had the new generator installed in about 4-5 hours. They set up the WiFi on the generator (yes, I can now check it from my phone) and did a test run to make sure everything was running perfectly. They thoroughly cleaned up all the areas where they worked, inside and out. I’m extremely pleased with the entire HPS process, people, and workmanship. Highly...
Read moreHome Power Systems installation was exceptional. My initial inquiry into a whole house back up generator was fielded by a knowledgeable representative and I was immediately directed to to the appropriate technician to answer specific questions and concerns. My in-home assessment, home survey, and recommendations were explained clearly and concisely. Brian, the sales representative was very professional and thorough. He listened to my concerns and questions and developed a plan that would work. My wife and I travelled to the company office to view the available products offered and were very pleased with the staff and facility as well as the information offered enabling us to make a final decision on our Kohler generator. Installation began about 10 days after my order and the most professional team of technicians arrived punctually and began the installation while explaining the entire process. The team was exceptional during the install, but I have to single out Mark, Tim, and Dominic for their expertise and Ingenuity on this complicated project. Due to a recent injury I was not able to watch the different steps of the install (or be in the way). Photos were taken and provided to me as the install progressed. There was minimal interruption of electrical service and everything went very smoothly. Completion was exactly as promised and was extremely neat. I cannot emphasize how exceptional this experience has been. Home Power Systems is an outstanding company from top to bottom. Every phase of the project was handled like it was their own personal project. Thank you for this experience in a world far less inclined to value the customer. Recommended at the highest...
