At the end of last ski season, I purchased a pair of ski pants on sale from Tahoe Mountain Sports. They still had the tags and had never been worn. Fast forward to this season—I’ve lost some weight (a good thing!), but unfortunately that means most of my ski gear no longer fits. Remembering the positive experience I had last year, I returned to Tahoe Mountain Sports excited to invest in a whole new ski wardrobe for my week on the slopes. I asked if I could exchange the unworn pants, still with tags. At first, the gentleman at the counter said yes, which made me hopeful. But in the next breath, he informed me it was past 30 days and that all sales were final—no exceptions. I was told to “sell them online.” While the staff were kind and polite, I think there’s an opportunity here for the team to think more like business owners. A simple exception—especially for a loyal, returning customer—could have led to a much larger sale and deeper brand loyalty. Instead, I left with a bit of disappointment and bought only what I absolutely needed elsewhere. Great retail is about more than policies—it’s about people and long-term relationships. I hope this feedback helps spark a little conversation internally about how flexibility and empowerment at the counter can create more meaningful customer...
Read moreDave , the owner of TMS , goes beyond what a typical business owner does . He has always committed to community involvement spanning regional issues both recreational and political. His support of local races ,clubs and athletes is highly appreciated.
TMS lecture and demo series is world class. My favorites span the avalanche awareness lecture/ lab to the backpacking cooking demo. Learned tons on how to be safe and how to eat well !
His knowledge and enthusiasm for trail running shoes , hydration packs , skiMo skis , Cali locations and outdoor stewardship is inspiring.
TMS website & social media has aided me in many areas .Alerted me to local events from races , trail reports , demo/ lecture nights, volunteering opportunities to snow conditions . A must do is to sign up with their social media.
The shop is staffed with kickass people that are of the same caliber. This spring I was invited to a causal tahoe wedding , owning very little “ nice” clothes . With TMS array of outdoor specific to causal wear , Jackie helped me immensely.
Hands down my favorite place in Tahoe to get affordable kick ass gear , advice and inspiration plus casual...
Read moreAwesome experience here. I walked in without an appointment on a weekday evening. Yohannis was attentive and informative in helping me try on and learn about ski touring boots. He spent over an hour working with me, explaining different boots and their benefits. He helped me feel comfortable in the boot by adding quick little modifications (inserts & toe pad). I did not feel pressured to purchase - in fact I walked out of the store without buying, but did come back 2 days later to purchase. Yohannis remembered me, set me up with my boots, and reminded me of their return policy in case the boots didn't work out during my weekend ski tour.
I love the boots and am keeping them and will be back for service & shopping in the future! Thank...
