A couple of months ago, I was asked to give a talk at the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show, which takes place on July 20-21, 2025. I sent in a summary and started to work on a Power-Point presentation. The show organizer was very slow about responding but eventually told me that my talk would be on July 20 and that I would receive a $50 honorarium (not much--I'm a professional geologist who was doing this to help out with a new show). I would estimate that I spent a total of 15 hours on putting together my presentation and emailing back and forth with the organizer.
I had asked the organizer about AV equipment, but she didn't respond. On July 14, after I had finished preparing my talk, I emailed her and asked again about AV equipment. She responded that she couldn't provide that because the venue charges her $100 just for an electrical outlet (??!). She told me that, of 13 speakers, I am the only one who asked for AV equipment and that she was sorry that my presentation didn't work with their needs. I assume that's because it would have cost her a few bucks to make reasonable arrangements.
This is the most unprofessional, amateurish treatment I have ever received in years of giving talks for mineral clubs and shows. If the rest of the show is handled in an equally unprofessional way, I would avoid it at all costs. Admission is $5--you would be better served to give $5 to a kid who wants to start...
