Wegmans has become a generic store. It is mostly wegmans brand items. Very little selection of name brands. Their brand quality and taste is ok but not worthy of buying over others. Add on top of this, their prices are high and you should shop elsewhere. The worst part is that when they do have a couple of choices besides their brand, the choices are usually large company, lower quality brands. So as not to compete with them. The best thing I saw was at a NY airport I saw their large corporate jet. A Challenger. International capable and top of the line. That explains why the prices are high.
Update 2/14/24. Well, I get inflation but Wegmans has gone overboard. I just purchased 1 bag of groceries for $80. Nothing fancy, some scallops ($22) was the most expensive. Mouthwash, 3 yogurts, radishes, heavy cream, doz eggs, cream cheese, box of crackers, 1 lemon and a bag of coffee beans (not some over priced bourgeois brand).
Update 8/28/23. To continue their road to be a generic store, most major brands of ice cream have been replaced except for a few select flavors. For flavor variety you are now required to buy wegman's brand.
Update 12/15/2022. See the pic I have posted here to see what Wegmans is seeking as iceberg lettuce. For $1.89 you don't even get enough to fill a taco. It is the size of a softball and fits in the palm of my hand.
Update 10/31/2022. Newest item to get the Axe from Wegmans is Claussen Pickles and Friendship Cottage Cheese. Claussen has been removed to make room for inferior tasting wegmans brand, and Friendship has been reduced to one tiny size container only for sale to also make room for inferior wegmans.
Update.. 8/20/19. These photos of biscuits are from wegman's brand buttermilk biscuits. Each one about a single bite in size. I urge all to be wary about buying wegman's branded items.
Update.. 8/21/19. Purchased Wegmans brand "Baby Arugula ". Opened bag and it is not baby arugula. I grow it at home and know. This is from full grown plants. I don't mind but it is false advertising. Bought one day ago. All yellow and decomposing after 24 hours. Taking back to store tomorrow.
Update 5/26/20. I am adding photos just to show how bad Wegman's is becoming a store brand/ generic store. Had to try the ketchup the other day because they "were out of" the name brands. It was ok at best. Didn't come close to Heinz or Hunts. I was told is was due to the pandemic and they can't get stock. I also went to buy steak sauce, all that was available was lesser purchased brands (2) and Wegmans brand. I'm sorry but if I'm spending $20 on a steak to serve somebody I don't want my steak saucing Wegmans on it at the table. Also, salad dressings, it's Wegmans or large cheap mass produced products. Extremely limited selection. I finally told the manager not to BS me. This has been happening way before this pandemic. Every other store small or large around is well stocked. You could tell I caught him and that he had to answer this question before. He just beat around the bush and diverted the question. I later on talked to somebody I know who works for the company, that person told me that they have been slowly increasing the Wegmans brand products and phasing out name brands. They don't necessarily tell store management what's happening. Many times they have quality names producing products for them but those products will be different to the name brand's original. Therefore their product may...
Read moreWe needed to purchase some items for a family barbecue, and this place was on our way between Philly & Pottstown. Being from Hawaii, I had no idea what a Wegman's was, but what a nice surprise it turned out to be!
They're located in the Providence Town Center, an outdoor shopping mall with a list of tenants that would make any Hawaii resident squeal with glee. The store is huge. Bigger than your average supermarket, but not as big as a Costco. They sell almost everything you can think of. Live Maryland Blue Crabs outside, cold and hot food bars, and all the usual items, just not in bulk. They even sell their line of store-branded items which are naturally a little cheaper than name brands. Think of it as a cheaper Whole Foods on steroids.
While this is just another grocery store, what sets this place apart for me is that they sold alcohol. Sounds odd right? Thought all markets sold alcohol? Nope. Anyone who lives or has been to Pennsylvania, or certain other states on the east coast know that they all have an oddball state law that restricts beer to be sold only in beer stores, and liquor in liquor stores. Trying to purchase beer in the city of Philadelphia from 7Eleven or Wawa a few years ago proved impossible as we could only found "liquor" stores. What a headache! But, there's a catch. Wegman's has a limit to the amount of alcohol sold per person, which was about a case. We had a 6 pack more and were declined a sale. Oh well, at least we didn't have to drive to a beer store!? They had a nice selection of mainstream beers along with a lot of specialty ones you'd never find in a regular store.
Prices were cheap, but then again I live in Hawaii where grocery prices are sometimes outrageous. Checkout registers were plentiful and the line moved...
Read moreIt's the Nation's #1 favorite grocery store chain! Family owned and originally from PA, the stores are clean, well organized, and surprisingly affordable. The Wegman's brand of canned and packaged goods are identical to name brands (or better!) and always cheaper. Well, cheaper that is until you buy their prepared foods - sushi, meals to-go, seafood, prime meats, and baked goods. That's where they make their money. These items are high quality, but pricey. Their catering - like an entire Christmas dinner - was sumptuously delicious and rave-worthy by all guests. The fresh produce department is second to none, in my opinion, with organic and regular items sometimes right next to each other for comparison. It seems to be the store where men like to shop. Weekend shoppers are overwhelmingly men (with or w/o kids) I think just because it's a happening experience. The beer section of the store is PHENOMENAL! The wine selection is like a mini-PA Wine and Spirits store. Oh, there's a Pub that's pretty nice, and a cafe that has hot/cold self- service food purchased by weight. They have LOTS of organic options (the entire Nature's Marketplace,) an excellent cheese department with thoroughly trained staff, a deli dept, a pharmacy, floral dept, and a really nice seasonal decorating section. There are two sizes of shopping carts and those "drive the cart" for kids. Shopper's lavatories are clean and right up front, not hidden in the bowels of the store (pun intended.) Some Wegmans stores might still have the Kid Zone which provides child...
