I saw pictures of a birthday party that one of our gymnastics friends had hosted here. I never knew the place existed and was SO excited to show this place to my kids. They had traveled alongside the national Guard and their rock wall in the summer and they couldn't make a hard enough climb for them, and good lord they tried.. Anyways, my daughters birthday was a few weeks away, so we were going to go there out this facility to see about having her birthday there. I had my 2 kids, and a child that is with me 90% of the time because of her drugged out parents. The TERRIBLE customer service I received by the black haired lady at the front desk was apolling. Said I couldn't sign for the 3rd if I didn't have court documentation of her being mine. Whatever, I'll call the "parent", even though I have her insurance card and sign for her on everything... so I go over to the computer to sign for my "legit" 2 kids, and she literally starts yelling (repeatedly) at us from across the lobby that 1)I can't sign a waiver for her (if she would have stopped yelling and watched I was going to call her "parent" to see if they weren't too strung out to sign a waiver online.. 2) yelled that she couldn't even be in the facility without one.. (did I need to escorted her out while signing a waiver??) Is this how you normally treat new guests? When we have a party we go all out and invite whomever they want, including their families. I work in at a school and could have sent alot of people your way, I can make sure to tell them not to...
Ā Ā Ā Read more3 stars as far as modern climbing gyms go... but 4 stars for being the only gym in Vancouver.
The pros:
The setting isn't too easy. Assuming the tweaky problems don't hurt you, you'll get strong if you climb here. It's a GREAT deal for the money. Sure, the place is smaller, but if you're a resourceful person, it's got everything you need to make you a strong, fit climber. Great location for those of us north of the river. The staff is great and everybody there is friendly and encouraging.
The cons: It's small. Bouldering is a constant challenge in choosing problems that don't top out over somebody. If the busy nights had any more people, it'd actually be a problem. Too many auto-belays and a second floor that is both useless to an adult climber and always empty. But I'm sure when the day comes, I'll be glad birthday parties happen up there, and not in the main area. Grimy old holds. Not much that can be done about that I suppose, because holds are $$$. The setting is clunky and just not that fun. The movement in particular is lacking. Hastily thrown together problems that probably work better for smaller people/kids. It IS plenty hard though, which is better than the alternative. There are a TON of spinners. Haven't had so many holds spin on me anywhere. I think it's the wall texture. Keeps things interesting I guess.
Overall, great value and more than enough for most climbers. Will definitely continue to use if I...
