Honestly I didn’t want to leave a review- I just wanted to move past it but it’s been a week and I haven’t been able to get over it. The hostess kind of looked us up and down in a way that made me uncomfortable, she looked unhappy and stressed- totally get it I’ve worked in the food industry before but it just was unkind. There was a table inside but she insisted we had to sit at the bar or outside- there was no reserved sign on it which is I guess fine but we picked to sit outside. We sat for quite a few minutes before we were brought our water- we ordered some of their alcoholic mixed drinks- the drinks were overpriced, small and honestly not that good.. we ordered an appetiser, the salt and pepper calamari, which was okay- there was no salt or pepper taste but I’ll get over that. I ordered the pork and my partner ordered the steak. Be aware they cook their pork to “medium”- it took a significant amount of time to get our food, which is understandable but the food was not hot when it came out so I’m assuming it sat for a while before delivered to us. And then the waitress kind of disappeared- we were waiting for our check patiently when someone came to clear the table and asked how things were- we were honest. It was just okay - i wasn’t thrilled by anything, I didn’t like the medium cooked pork- I was informed that was how they cooked it when ordering it, I did say it’s fine and yes I ate it bc at the point it came out I was starving. It was indeed “medium”… i understand the regulations for cooking it have been changed but it was not good cooked that way. It was a small piece of pork for the price, there was a significant amount of fat on it vs meat.. the mango chutney on top carried the flavour of it. The steak was cheap, small, and not cooked how my partner asked— for a $40 steak it was very disappointing. The mashed potatoes were kinda cold and the asparagus was a very small portion. I was under the impression it would be more than one veggie from the wording on the menu- I guess that’s my bad for misunderstanding the wording. After our food had been cleared (like 15 minutes after we ate) the waitress came out and asked if we wanted free dessert since it was our first time in. We agreed. After waiting for like 20 minutes for it, we waved the waitress down and asked for the check and the waitress was a bit offended she said yes but that dessert was coming out - in a tone that was kind of uncalled for.. We just wanted to leave at that point we were tired and uncomfortable.. we did still wait bc she didn’t take the check back when my partner put their card in it- while she was still standing at the table— I’m going to be honest the free donuts were the best thing there only because they were hot. They did not come back to collect the check so we went went inside to pay for it, we wanted to leave.. The price for food portion was a bit disappointing.. we won’t be back. I kind of had a stomach...
Read moreWe made it to Amaro's Table the first day they opened their patio seating this season. It was a fantastic spot to enjoy a springtime happy hour. The outdoor seating area is set up comfortably, with enough space between tables to not feel cramped. There are lights strung above that would probably make for a romantic evening after sunset, and the music selection playing in the background set a breezy mood for the afternoon. Service was very friendly and attentive. And the happy hour food and drinks were reasonably priced, fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious, with enough variety for everyone to find something they'd enjoy.
This time around, we ordered the carnitas tacos. The carnitas were moist, flavorful, and not too fatty like some I've had at other places. We also opted for one of the rotating daily cocktails on tap. They had 2 that day (one vodka based drink with berries and the gin based cocktail we ordered), plus a daily sangria. Our drinks were fruity, complex, and definitely something I would order again, if available.
During a previous visit, I'd ordered the chicken tenders, which were well seasoned, tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly. They also had a great crunch and were not overly greasy. They came with a range of house made sauces that set this option apart from tenders you'll get elsewhere. We asked our server, and she brought out an assortment to try.
Another item that we loved at Amaro's is the ricotta donuts. The ricotta is incorporated into the batter, so don't expect these to have a filling. But they are like dense round donut holes that come with a fabulous caramel sauce for dipping. A word of caution- these are delicious, but very filling. My eyes were larger than my stomach with these. But the leftovers heated up well for a treat the next day- especially because they tucked some caramel sauce into the box with whatever I couldn't finish.
I've done happy hour at plenty of places, and this is one of my favorites. Who doesn't love finding a locally owned business that's getting it right? I look forward to...
