Magellan’s Cross is one of the most famous and historical landmarks in Cebu. Located right in the heart of downtown Cebu City, near the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, this spot is a must-visit if you’re exploring the city for the first time.
The cross is said to have been planted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, marking the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. The original cross is believed to be inside the wooden cross you see inside the small octagonal chapel, built to protect it from damage and people chipping it for souvenirs.
When you arrive, you’ll see the chapel standing in an open plaza. The ceiling is painted with beautiful artwork showing the first baptism and conversion of early Filipinos to Christianity. It’s a small space, but very meaningful. Locals and tourists alike come here to light candles, say a prayer, or simply take photos and reflect.
You may also encounter vendors outside selling candles, and some even offer to dance while praying for your intentions. While this is part of the local tradition, it’s totally optional.
What I liked:
Rich historical and religious significance
Beautiful painting on the ceiling
Clean and well-maintained area
Close to other attractions like the Santo Niño Church and Fort San Pedro
No entrance fee!
Things to know:
Best to go in the morning or late afternoon (less heat and fewer people)
Be respectful — it’s a religious site
Watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas nearby
You can buy souvenirs from small vendors around the plaza
Magellan’s Cross is not just a tourist spot — it’s a symbol of Cebu’s deep cultural and spiritual roots. A quick visit is enough to appreciate its historical value, and it’s definitely worth including in your Cebu city tour. Whether you're religious or just into history, you'll learn something meaningful here.

Crowds: The site can get very crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons, making it challenging to fully appreciate the historical significance and take pictures without a crowd in the background.
Size: Magellan's Cross is relatively small and may not meet the expectations of those looking for a larger, more imposing historical monument.

Maintenance Issues: At times, the condition of the site and the surrounding area may suffer from maintenance issues, such as graffiti or litter.

Magellan's Cross is a historical landmark located in Cebu City, Philippines. It is a symbol of the introduction of Christianity to the archipelago. The cross is housed within a small chapel near the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, and it marks the spot where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross upon arriving in Cebu in 1521. The original cross is believed to have been encased in wood to protect it from being chipped away by devotees seeking its supposed miraculous powers. The site is significant not only for its historical importance but also as a place of pilgrimage and reflection for both locals and tourists.

I didnt realize how much I was missing in Cebuano history until I saw the evidences at the museum. I had a terrific time! How the preserve the canons, the walls, the area. The place may look simple but has a lot to offer. I love the Viviende del Tentiente! The room may be little but contains a lot of information. I get to learn a lot and appreciate Cebu and the Cebuanos. I learned that Cebu once produced hemp and make it as a living. The Bishop's pPalace is now the Patria Building and it was so cool, it looked like the area was in a town in Cebu. I love how sophisticated it look in a black and white photo. I learned that there was an existing train in mambaling. The service travels from Danao-Cebu City-Argao. It would be very useful having a train in the City these days. I also saw the Hotel Lalk's that reminded me of the hotel in the John Wick movie. I had so much fun visiting the past. I also saw the differences between the then Cathedral church and the now. I can now picture how progressive Cebu is compare to the old photos. Calle Manalili was very interesting. The triangular park of Plaza Parian. I get to learn that Metro Cebu Water District was used to be Osmeña Waterworks. My experience in Fort San Pedro has exceeded my expectations. I love how we get to see these artifacts and get to share it to everyone. I strongly suggest everyone to check the place and enjoy learning and visiting Cebu. Thank you to the keepers and making Fort San Pedro possible.

FORT SAN PEDRO CEBU LOCATED INSIDE PLAZA INDEPENDECIA CEBU PHILIPPINE. FORT SAN PEDRO IS RIGHT NEXT TO PIER ON INSIDE A HUGE PARK CALL INDEPENDECIA. PEOPLE GO THERE TO EAT RELAX AND LOTS OF LOVERS ARE GAGGING AROUND ON BANCHES.FROM THAT LOCATION YOU ARE ALSO AT WALKING DISTANCE TO CEBU CITY HALL AND CEBU CENTRAL POST OFFICE. EVERYTHING IN THE PARK IS IN GOOD SHAPE SO IT IS WITH FORT SAN PEDRO. TO GET IN ITS 30 PISO AND BY TAXI IT'S NOT MORE THAN 150 PISO. THE VISIT IS WORTH IT BECAUSE IT'S LIGHT AND EASY WHY? BECAUSE SOMETIMES SOME PLACES AFTER VISITING MAKES YOU REALLY REALLY SAD TO THE POINT OF CRYING BUT THIS TIME AROUND EVERYTHING WAS LIGHT AND POSITIVE. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN I VISITED THE MUSEUM OF WAR IN HO CHI MINH CITY VIETNAM IT TOOK ME A LOT OF COURAGE TO FINISH THE VISIT BECAUSE ANY NORMAL HUMAN BEING WILL JUST CRY BECAUSE IT'S AGAINST ANY HUMAN LOGIC THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED THERE. ..IT IS TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH. OK SAN PEDRO IS THE LANDMARK WHERE THE SPANISH FIRST LANDED IN CEBU AND SETUP WOODEN FORT TO KEEP THEM SAFE FROM THE LOCAL AND NOW BRICKS AND YOU HAVE THE WHOLE PROCESS OF HOW EVERYTHING CAME TO BE WITH PICTURES OLD FLAGS AND EVEN REAL PLANTS SPICES WHICH WERE AVAILABLE OR MADE AVAILABLE IN THAT TIME. I AM RATHER SURPRISED TO SEE THIS MANY TOURIST BUSES PARK IN FRONT OF FORT SAN PEDRO. YES IT IS A TOURIST DESTINATION VISIT SPOT. I ENJOYED MY VISIT.

Fort San Pedro in Cebu City stands as a fascinating relic of history, nestled in the heart of the bustling city. This 16th-century military defense structure, the smallest and oldest triangular bastion fort in the country, offers visitors a glimpse into the Philippines’ colonial past. Beyond its historical appeal, Fort San Pedro also features a charming little patio—an unexpected delight for those who visit.
The patio area of Fort San Pedro is a quaint and serene spot, perfect for relaxation. Here, visitors can often enjoy the ambient strumming of live music, adding a layer of enchantment to the already peaceful surroundings. The live performances, typically featuring local musicians, create a soothing backdrop as you stroll through the gardens or sit back and soak in the historic ambiance.
The fort itself is well-preserved, allowing history enthusiasts to explore its walls, bulwarks, and museum with artifacts that tell tales of its past. The entrance fee for non-Filipino visitors is a modest PHP 30, making it an affordable excursion for tourists. This nominal fee contributes to the maintenance and preservation of this historical site.

A Historical Gem in Cebu
Fort San Pedro is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture. This well-preserved Spanish fort, located in the heart of Cebu City, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Philippines' colonial past. The site is not only significant historically but also beautifully maintained, with lush gardens surrounding the sturdy stone walls.
The small museum inside the fort provides insightful exhibits about the fort's history and the early days of Cebu. Walking through the fort, you can almost feel the presence of the past. The views from the top of the walls are stunning, offering a great perspective of the city's waterfront and surrounding areas.
The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, eager to share information and answer questions. The entrance fee is very reasonable, making it accessible for everyone. It's also a peaceful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.
Overall, Fort San Pedro is an excellent destination for tourists and locals alike. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a beautiful and tranquil spot to visit, this fort won't disappoint.

Like stepping back over 300 years, Fort San Pedro is one of the oldest places to visit in Cebu City.
This stone and mortar, triangle structure dates from at least 1738. The date 1738 is inscribed on its gate.
It is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. It represents the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. And, as a structure, it reflects the Philippines' history of change -- from colonialism to independence.
For example, at the end of the 19th century, Filipinos revolted against Spain, known as the Philippine Revolution. At the end of The Battle of Manila, the Filipinos took control of this fort in order to fortify its shore.
During World War II, the Japanese used the walls as a stagging area. After WWII, it was a Filipino army hospital and army camp; Cebu Garden Club; a zoo; government building.
It is now run by the City of Cebu government.
It is what the Philippines means to me -- never ending, centuries of change.

PROS:
We went in the morning on a weekday, and it actually felt like the place was exclusive to us (well it wasn't crowded at all) but having said that, I think it was just good timing.
Aesthetic wise, it's actually quite nice, though the thick aquarium glass could do with a bit more cleaning so we can better see the fishes. But I do think it's got the potential to be something better a couple years from now.
The place was wheelchair friendly, which I was very impressed with, except that my brother wasn't able to see the lories on the 2nd floor because the lift would only take them straight to the 3rd floor.
We got good group photos, but not of the actual animals (since there were only a few).
CONS:
Right off the bat, upon entering the park, we were told that water flasks were not allowed inside due to safety purposes (I know it would be unsafe for the animals if someone would pour something dangerous in their tanks). I then started to question whether that overweighed the fact that it is hot in Cebu, and people need to stay hydrated. We caved in but asked if we could bring just our baby's water and our moms (2 senior citizens) and my brother (PWD) , to which they still said no. By this time I've had enough and just wanted to get inside and start the tour.
When we got in, we saw the price of the drinks:
80 for soda cans
40 for bottled water
(Yeah, I had the same reaction)
This is just my suggestion though, but what would have helped was, if they were going to ban drinks from outside (especially water), it would have been nice to offer a family friendly alternative, like a drinking station with plastic/ paper cups (if the issue of having actual drinking fountains were because of COVID). The weather was scorching, and to top it all, we were wearing masks because we had to. (So yes, you can imagine how thirsty and uncomfortable it was for us walking around). They however did provide ventilation with huge fans in every room.
The experience was quite expensive for the attractions we got to see. The only highlight of the day was the bird show, which was fun, but was very short. After the show, we expected to see more of the park, but the presenter said that if we wanted to exit the park, it's through the oceanarium. That was it. Done.
So obviously, we were hungry, and thirsty, so we made our way to SM seaside.
The whole thing only took 2 hours for us to finish.
I have high hopes for this ocean park, give it a few years and more attractions. It's a beautiful park, however, I don't think we will be going back anytime soon.

We went inside at around 12:30pm. We got our tickets from Klook and children below 2ft are free to enter.
The first thing we saw was this small crocodile. They put this small square to know where we should stand.
We just followed the path and saw different kinds of fish. Some big. Some small.
Then we saw a monitor lizard that was held by a park crew. People were allowed to touch it and if you were brave enough, you can hold it.
Then we got to the feeding of Loris. A feed of Lori would cost 100Php and a lot of Loris would land on your hand. In my case, I didn't have to buy the feed because a Lori landed on my shoulder (as you can see on the picture).
Following the path again, we saw many fish along the way. One of the highlights of our visit, was the Bird Show. They have in-house birds that they train to do tricks like shoot a ball on a ring and ring toss. They even have a bird that knows how to recycle haha. They also have home-grown pigeons that they release almost at the end of the show. They look so majestic because they were a lot. The last bird they showed was an eagle (which I forgot which breed, but the the trainer told us it was the same eagle on Kuya Kim Atienza's Matanglawin logo).
The big tank was after the bird show. So many big fish like sting rays and sharks. I loved the big tank. But quite difficult to take instagrammable pictures because there were a lot of people.
The last attraction we saw was feeding of the fish at the main tank, which happens only 2x a day (Please do look at the times online as I forgot what time was that). This happens at the cafe inside. We ordered a basque burnt cheesecake and watched the feeding happening in front of us. The last we saw was the divers holding a welcome sign, welcoming us to Cebu Ocean Park.
Before you can exit, you can pass first at the shop. Thet have different merchandise from the park there.
And that was my experience in Cebu Ocan Park.
I loved it.
I will definitely be back.
Klif MacadatoKlif Macadato
The biggest and best attraction I've visited this year 2023.
The entrance is well organized with fish display with information for people to read. There is a display of various small critters and reptiles somewhere in a dark huge room. Going further, there is a bird feeding place where the birds (lories) perch on your arm, head or shoulders as you hold the watermelon juice they love to drink. They are so friendly and accustomed to people that they will not fly away if you try to go near and snap a photo. They might even initiate going to you just for fun.
Further into the park, an activity area is present where you can touch manta rays. Fish spa is also available for your tired feet.
In the fish spa area is where the way to the bird show and oceanarium is located. A stopover for snacks is provided.
The bird show is very fun and you can see the wild but trained birds up close. They also show the cockatoo's intelligence by performing basic human tasks.
The last part of the trip is the biggest and awe inspiring Deep Tank Lagoon where you go to a tunnel being mesmerized by the wonderful creatures of the ocean.
Lots of fish species such as sharks, groupers, parrotfish, eagle rays, stingrays and other types are there.
At the end is a restaurant diner with a humongous aquarium in display.
Of course before leaving, there is a souvenir shop for your kids if they fancy cute Nemo stuff toys, penguins, seals, etc.
Overall it's a wonderful experience all worthy of a P800 (P550 promo) price tag (2023).
Lots of photo opportunities are there too for the avid Instagram poster.
Seriously, it's even bigger than Manila Ocean Park.
Simply the best!
