I had the pleasure of ordering takeaway from Chakna Indian Restaurant on Rundle Street in Adelaide and was absolutely blown away - not just by the food, but by the entire experience. From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the owners: a beautiful family team of husband, wife and their son. Their friendliness and genuine hospitality made me feel like more than just a customer - I felt like I was a guest in their home. I ordered the butter chicken and garlic naan, and let me tell you - it was divine. The butter chicken was rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced, while the naan was soft, flavourful with perfectly crispy edges. Every bite was a reminder of how authentic Indian food should taste. What truly set Chakna apart was how the family went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable and happy. Their service was heartfelt, not just professional, and it added so much warmth to the meal. If you're in Adelaide and craving Indian cuisine that's full of flavour and served with heart, do yourself a favour and visit Chakna! It's not just a meal - it's an experience.

The best Indian food in town. Fantastic atmosphere (I recommend dinner time), excellent staff, and incredible flavors. We had a group of 5 and had chicken tikka masala, beef rogan josh, chicken biryani, raita, papadum, naan varieties, and a medley of rice. All was perfect. Each dish had their own unique flavors - raita is nice to have in between savory and spicy dishes. If you're like me and love watching Indian street food videos, you've likely seen gol ghappa (and never had it before, and are curious to try) and I highly recommend it especially if you're with a group (unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photo). It's like a shot but of a savory food; it's a fun way to start the meal. We've also had cocktails (I had the 'I Have To Drive' mocktail) which were tasty and served by skillful staff - one offered some special brews and was responsive to one of us looking for a recommendation, so kudos to staff for being very hospitable.

We visited this restaurant based on a friend’s recommendation and ordered the following dishes: 1. Lamb Vindaloo 2. Prawn Malabar 3. Kadhai Chicken To my pleasant surprise, the curries were as authentic as it gets. Unlike many places where Indian curries are made using the same bulk-prepared base, each dish here had its own distinct flavors and freshly made base. The attention to detail in the flavors was absolutely remarkable. Our server, a lovely and warm-hearted lady, made the experience even better with her gracious hospitality—it felt almost like dining at home. The atmosphere was just perfect, capturing the lively yet comforting vibe of a traditional Indian restaurant. It appears to be a family-run restaurant and I genuinely wish them all the success they deserve. I’ve already recommended this place to my colleagues and will definitely visit again on our future trips!

I don’t give out 5 stars typically, just my thing. BUT service got one, it was superb. Rundle St is our backyard, our home is in Rundle Mall. For the past 6 mths or so we have walked past this place, looking in as you pass it looks okay. Last night we were out with our neighbours and decided to give it a go. From the moment we paused just inside the entrance we were greeted warmly. A quick check on a tablet found a table for us and we were shown to table 10. A short time settling in a we had a staff member appear with the food and drinks menu, water for the table and a wonderful smile and helpful manner. They answered all of our questions and for one curly question about meat type disappeared returning a short time later with the answer. Also informed us the happy hour discount finished at 7pm on a range of drinks. A lovely touch, we had 5 minutes to decide. I can’t praise the service enough. Every time you wanted attention or other service within seconds someone was there to help with a smile and obvious desire to please. It was for this reason we left a reasonable tip at the end of the night, I’m not typically a tipper. Food was wonderful, I had the beef Vindaloo and my wife had the Veg Dum Biryani, our friends had the Beef Korma and the Fish Curry. Side dishes of 3 plain rice, 2 x mango chutney and 2 x Plain Raita. 1 x garlic Naan and 1 x cheese and garlic Naan. We of course had our drinks as well. Total bill, which was happily split in half upon request was $187 We departed happy, offering thanks and compliments to the staff, at home as we parted ways with our friends the consensus was we all had a great evening and Chakna was on our “return to” list. And that is what life is all about, great friends, great service, great food.

Thankyou...

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Indian dining experience in Adelaide with a modern twist — Chakna Tandoori Bites is an absolute gem. Located conveniently in the heart of North Adelaide, this place blends fine-dine sophistication with a vibrant, youthful energy that makes it perfect for both intimate dinners and lively gatherings.

From the moment the starters arrived, every bite was bursting with rich, layered spices. The Tandoori Platter was perfectly grilled with smoky aromas and juicy tenderness. Our food had that rare home-style depth of flavor — slow-cooked, well-spiced, and comforting.

Even the naan breads were next level — crisp yet soft, and ideal for mopping up the gravies. Their cocktail menu is also fun and well-crafted — we tried the Kala khatta mojito which paired beautifully with the spices.

The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, happy to explain dishes and offer pairing suggestions. The owner himself came over to check if we were enjoying everything — a thoughtful touch you rarely see these days.

Loved the contemporary decor with Indian fusion accents. It feels classy yet relaxed. Background music added to the vibe but didn’t overpower conversations. It’s clear they’ve put effort into creating a space that feels both upscale and approachable.

Worth Every Dollar

For the quality, portion size, and overall experience, the pricing is very reasonable. Perfect for a weekend splurge, birthday dinner, or when you’re hosting guests and...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chakna Tandoori Bites, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish!

Accommodating Off-Menu Requests:

One of the highlights of my visit was their willingness to accommodate an off-menu item that included Kasoori Methi. The staff went above and beyond to whip it up for me. Their flexibility and eagerness to please truly set them apart. It’s not often you find a restaurant that makes you feel so valued as a customer!

Seating:

The ambiance at Chakna is fantastic, with both indoor and outdoor seating that creates a perfect environment for any occasion. The indoor area is cozy and well-decorated, making it ideal for family dinners. The outdoor seating offers a refreshing atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a meal while enjoying tyhe breeze of the day and soaking up the lovely weather.

Family-Friendly Vibes: Speaking of family, the vibe here is incredibly welcoming. The staff treated us like part of the family, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s clear that Chakna is a place where families can come together to enjoy good food and great company.

Overall, I highly recommend Chakna Tandoori Bites for anyone looking for delicious Indian cuisine served with a smile. Their ability to accommodate special requests, combined with a comfortable dining environment and a family-friendly atmosphere, makes it a standout choice. I can't wait to return for another...
