The Howling Owl — Restaurant in Adelaide

Hosted a professional event here with excess of 100 people in attendance. We were extremely disappointed with the attitude of the staff on the night. Attendees were told off for "crowding" the bar upon entry, despite there being no other place to stand as people waited for their name to be checked off of an attendance list. Other attendees witnessed eye rolling and sighs from the staff running the bar when they asked for specific drink orders. Our music director was rudely told to no longer enter the room where his phone was playing music "in case he steals liquor stored in the room". He had to enter the room multiple times to turn the music on and off for frequent speeches, awards and announcements, which was fine according to the Howling Owl manager before the event. The employee's comment was completely unreasonable. Another attendee was beginning to make an announcement, when the microphone was rudely snatched out of her hand by one of the staff members and they yelled "NO" at her. The attendee believed this was because she picked up the microphone when music was playing and the staff member may have thought she was mishandling it. Nonetheless, this staff member was completely out of line and could have spoken to the attendee respectfully. This made the attendee very upset to the point of crying. We ended up cancelling the announcement because we did not want the ordeal to ruin the night. We could go on about further disappointments that the Howling Owl caused on the night. The Howling Owl has a great atmosphere and is friendly and cozy downstairs. However, I'm leaving a review after hiring the mezzanine as a venue for a friend's hen's/bridal shower. As mentioned by other reviewers, Rachel, the owner/manager and her partner Mick, were amazing to work with! Rachel was so responsive and helpful and super adaptable with lots of suggestions in accordance with our budget and different things we wanted - especially for someone like me who hates organising events, she made it really painless. All the staff I met whenever I dropped by + on the night were also great. We didn't have to decorate much because the venue itself is already so nice, but they were also very accommodating around decor set up and collection which made things super easy, and of course such a great location - was perfect for botanic gardens beforehand and other bars after! We held our daughter's 21st at The Howling Owl. What an awesome venue. From when we first booked the event Rachel and the team were outstanding. Their communication was excellent. Everything we discussed regarding the event was actioned. The staff on the evening were fantastic. Everything went to plan and our guests absolutely loved the evening. They were raving about the venue and 'the vibe'. The retro pieces of furniture and the cool artwork added an extra touch to the venue. The long bar bench was perfect for a grazing platter too. There was ample seating for those that wanted to chill out and plenty of room for dancing too. Every aspect of the venue and the event was perfection. Thank you Rachel and the team.
