We had a pleasant evening dining alfresco on a warm Brisbane summer night. This place is clearly popular with the locals, with most outside tables being occupied and in addition, a steady stream of take-away patrons queuing up outside.
Four of us dined and we ordered a selection of starters and main courses, including dumplings, spring rolls, chicken karaage, massaman beef curry and two serves of coconut rice. And to wash it all down a few bottles of refreshing Tiger Lager and a glass of red wine for my wife. No complaints about the food; it was all fresh and tasty and served in decent portions. The dumplings and spring rolls were the perfect way to start the evening. I liked the contrast between the soft dumplings and crispy spring rolls. The chicken karaage was succulent and tender, wrapped in a nice crunchy batter. The massaman beef curry was melt-in-your-mouth tender and soaked in a fragrant and aromatic yellow curry and sprinkled with peanuts and shallots.
Ordering is done via individual tablets on the tables, and that worked fairly smoothly once we got the hang of it, although given the amount of sit-in diners and takeaway orders, service was a tad slow and erratic, with some meals coming before others. I guess this is one of the downsides to electronic ordering, as there didn’t seem to be an ability to accumulate orders before hitting the button, so the result was that one order was placed and the dish was brought to the table, another order, another dish brought to the table, and so on. Each diner has their own tablet, which added to the confusion. But in the end, to be fair to these guys, everybody got their meals in good time and no-one went hungry.
Our total bill for four came to what I thought was a hefty $140 for five drinks (the Tiger Lager was supposedly on special at $5 ea, so that should have reduced the bill), two starters and four mains.
The toilets are in the next door building and you need to grab the key from the front desk. They were clean and well provisioned, although the key only opened the female cubicle, which didn’t really matter as it’s a single cubicle anyway.
The ambience was super casual, laid back and relaxed and full marks to the hardworking owner and her staff for creating a pleasant dining atmosphere and serving high quality food in...
Read moreRead moreWell we came here mid week after some failed attempts to getting a table (unreserved) other nights. You need to book a table here, ahead! We came here on a windy cold Brisbane night. I do have to say that even with their gas heaters, the lack of a wind break was not pleasing. Our napkins were blowing away, my baby was upset and the food got cold quicker than we wished. After having made the attempt to come here, with high expectations from the online reviews, we did not get off to a good start. The ordering system was not to the liking of my parents, 4 off, 60 years old. They struggled with the ordering system and wanted to order with the waiter. He didn't notice their frustrations but the female waitress did and looked after everyone quite well and with a smile. Now the food, well we ordered soo much from the menu and no two meal the same. Everyone tried a bit of all the food. With more the 20 plates which we ate from, not one person disliked a single plate. Many tried new foods and tastes. They all loved all the food. Oh it was delightful. From curries to soups to all things Thai, we loved it. Personally, i wished my dish was of a larger portion as it dissappeared too quickly (I wonder why LOL). Being off the beaten track, having high expectations, this restaurent certainly delivered. We stayed past closing and soaked up the relaxing quiet side of town. Definately...
Another day and yet another Thai restaurant. Loving how Thai cuisine is really hitting Brisbane lately. Can l eat Thai food everyday…yes l can, especially when it’s delicious and authentic as Gala Thai. When we visited we saw a lot of regular customers come in and l can see why. The food here is exceptional and the service was a standout. They had a great ordering system which l loved. Select what you want from the device they provide and within minutes the food arrived at our table. Fast service but the food was honest amazing and authentic Thai food packed with flavour. I also loved the variety they had on offer and l could have kept ordering. I ordered the Pad Ki Mow to be Thai hot and it was perfection on the plate. I was really impressed at the Barra portion size. It was so fresh and the broth was so beautifully balanced. Actually all the dishes were impeccable. A definite must visit. Meal breakdown:
Pad Ki Mow
Duck Curry
Barra Ginger and Soy...
