What an incredible experience! Hubby and I visited Gaylord for their NH-44 Food Festival and were absolutely blown away. This wasn’t just dinner — it felt like a culinary journey through India. From the rich Lamb Rogan Josh of Kashmir to the spicy, vibrant Prawn Kuzhambu of Tamil Nadu, every dish was bursting with authenticity and flavour. The attention to detail here is next level - unique sauces for each dish, natural colours, a 50:50 veg/non-veg balance, plus an amazing selection of cocktails and Indian whiskies. I also really appreciate that the menu is 95% gluten free, vegan options are taken seriously, and the restaurant is completely peanut-free. The setting inside the heritage Grand Hotel is gorgeous - chandeliers, marble artwork, and that mix of elegance with warmth that makes it feel perfect for both date night and celebrations. Service was friendly and attentive, and you can tell the chefs cook with real passion and pride. Gaylord has been around for 40 years for a reason - this is hands-down one of Melbourne’s best Indian dining experiences. Highly recommend booking in during festival week (or honestly, anytime!).

Starting off with Pani Puri, Peppercorn Chicken Tikka and Beetroot Tiki, I was absolutely wowed by the chicken tikka. Bold punchy flavours, with a touch of smokiness from being grilled. The Pani Puri was crispy and stuffed with delicious potatoes and chickpeas, but the tangy water divided opinions of my fellow diners. The Beetroot Tiki wasn’t what I had in mind, mainly because it was described as a croquette. It was more like a pancake, but in terms of flavours, it was satisfying to eat. The Prune Kofta was my favourite from the 3 mains. It had a subtle sweetness from the prunes, and the thick and creamy korma sauce was both piquant and hearty. The Methi Marg reminded me of a more subdued butter chicken, and the Dal Tadka was overall a pleasant dish. The garlic naan was indispensable for soaking up all the sauce from the curries. For dessert, the Gajrella (caramelised carrot pudding) was beautifully spiced and the pistachios and cashews added a much needed texture. It’s definitely not what many are accustomed to in terms of dessert but it’s well worth trying because it gets better the more you eat it.

😌👍🏼 As quirky as the name is, the food is anything but. I've always wanted to try this place, and I finally found the opportunity to see for myself if this place was worth it. I'm happy to say that it was. 🍛🌶 I and my friend ordered the Veg Dum Biryani (Basmati rice casserole, flavoured with spices, saffron and rose water served with raita, $21 per plate) for takeaway. From the outside it looked just like any other vegetable biryani but when I dug into it, I could immediately taste the difference, and the superiority of this one over others. It was delicious, spicy and full of veggies, which ticked off all my boxes. It wasn't very oily, which was a plus. The raita was fine, I've had much better ones (make one better myself), but overall I was very satisfied with the food. 😎🆒 The restaurant looked a bit traditional from the outside but inside was a different story. With lavish red decor, coziness was oozing from this place, and although we had a takeaway, I'd very much like to dine here. The staff seemed alright to me. This restaurant was a good find!

Disclaimer: it's a long review from a very happy mum of a 7 year old coeliac!

We planned our first trip to Melbourne with our 7year old coeliac after his diagnosis last year. We are vegetarians and were looking for a coeliac safe Indian restaurant. We contacted Gaylord and were told that the kitchen can accommodate coeliacs. Not only did they have gf bread option - which they make separately on a dedicated pan(instead of the tandoor) but they also have Currys which are Gf. They are very well aware of cross contamination

What I was extremely impressed with however, was how the team at Gaylord handled our request. The chef Himanshu came out to check with us and prepared some sides for my son, fresh from scratch. A special shout out to Yamin Sheikh, who was extremely patient over the call and took note of all our requests and requirements. He double checked with Chef and called us back reassuring us about cross contamination.Indian tempering might contain asafoetida (which is a hidden source of gluten in Indian food) Yamin advised us on the safe options that did not contain asafoetida. On our arrival at the restaurant he ensured everything was in order. Yamin’s knowledge, preparedness and passion to make it safe for my son reflected in his efforts and we ended up visiting the restaurant 4 times during our stay.

I highly recommend Gaylord to coeliacs who are looking to eat Indian food. The food is delicious the staff is patient and reliable and the experience and satisfaction level is outstanding. Big thank you to Mr. Yamin Sheikh one more time for his dedication and...

Went there tonight on a Saturday evening and first thing we noticed was cutlery had stains on it which meant they were not wiped off. Front and wait staff never offered water until we specifically asked for it. The most bland food I have ever tasted in an Indian restaurant within Melbourne's vicinity. The explanation from the staff came in the form of saying the management is still the same when they moved from inner city to Spencer street but head chef is not there at the moment. We ordered chat papdi, samosa chat and paneer tikka as entrees before even placing the mains order. Chat papdi tasted like the chef went and picked up papdis and just threw some yoghurt on top along with some tamarind chutney. Paneer tikka came out sizzling hot so thought would perhaps be better but OMG, it did not even have salt and pepper in it which made our table of 3 people just get up, pay, give a review to the front staff as well as kitchen staff and leave. They offered to make a new paneer tikka and bring it out but that doesn't make up for the fact that so far the experience was far below average. I used to go to this place when I worked in inner city all the time with my work colleagues but unfortunately this experience tonight has really put me off in a very bad way. Guys, no wonder except a group of about 8-10 people you were...

I love this restaurant! BUT want to share constructive feedback.

Service is so lovely. Staff are the nicest ever :)

But I couldn't help notice they seat people close together , food sometimes takes wayyy too long and the pricing??

I think Indian food might just be overpriced everywhere? But $34 for one curry haha is a tad much 😂

I love this place though, just hope they improve.

I also don't understand how a hotel thinks an Indian restaurant is a good thing to have connected to them? It's the best food, love it... But when you stay in a hotel you need options (breakfast mainly). You are traveling. You don't want to spend 30-50 bucks every night. You need an option for a cup of coffee and something light (feedback for the Grand hotel).

Still though, the yummiest Indian restaurant in Melbourne. The loveliest staff in the world (so nice!)

Just, but highly priced , weird to seat everyone left to right , takes a bit of time and the partnership in a hotel is only good for the restaurant (weird for a hotel)

Oh also!!!

Clean outside or side up with a cafe that can clean those disgusting umbrella things on the side.

I love this restaurant, it's great but not yet at potential. Almost there, if you like good food and can ignore prices then this...
