The Simple Foodie — Restaurant in Melbourne

I hate giving negative feedback, but I don't think I would be very honest if I raved about The Simple Foodie. First, Let me say that the young gentleman who attended to us was very friendly and chatty, and welcomed us warmly. We had just arrived in Melbourne after a long drive. It was cold and wet, so we chose The Simple Foodie because it was a short walk from our hotel, and there were several five star reviews. The shop was empty, but for one customer, so I can't say there was a good atmosphere. The cakes and other sweet treats looked very appetizing, as did the sandwiches, but we wanted something warm. There were a few options on display, which looked well presented, so we both chose chicken schnitzel with two different accompaniments. We also took a slice of banana bread to share. We were told that everything is made in-house and freshly prepared, but once we started on our meals, we felt that 'freshly prepared' was stretching the truth! Basically what we had was a bit of chicken Schnitzel cut up into fingers, about the size of chips, a piece of quiche, served on a bed of finely chopped spinach and bacon (I think!) It was all very dry and chewy, and neither of us ate more than a few small bites, before abandoning the rest. It really felt like we had been served leftovers! The banana bread was likewise dry, and certainly not freshly baked, but it was very tasty. I put butter on mine, which made it more palatable. Comparing our experience here to other cafés and bakeries nearby, we feel that The Simple Foodie will need to make some very significant improvements, or they will certainly not survive amongst their...

THIS is a place you MUST go to if you want to have good coffee, friendly services and healthy yummy food in the city! Found this place on the 1st day of our holiday in Melbourne. It was right across the road from the hotel we stayed in.

Love the simplicity of the shop. The variety of food is enough to cater to tourist or people who just need to grab a quick breakfast to go before work. My favourite was the Cheesy Mushroom Toastie. The coffee is good. Wish they also have fresh juices.

Have become a fan of the shop after visiting for 5 consecutive days (2 Dine in + 3 takeouts). Will definitely visit again when we visit...
