Tokyo Maki is a fantastic Japanese–Korean fusion restaurant serving up the best of both cuisines. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with soft, relaxing music that reminded me of a hotel lobby, making me feel truly welcomed and cared for. The waitress was incredibly friendly and attentive, always making sure customers were looked after. As someone with coeliac disease, I was delighted to find a separate gluten-free menu. The variety of gluten-free options was amazing. I ordered the spicy tuna maki rolls and the Japanese fried rice, both of which were delicious. I also loved that they provided an entire jar of gluten-free soy sauce just for our table, such a thoughtful touch! My boyfriend ordered the Charshu ramen and enjoyed it just as much. I was so impressed with Tokyo Maki that I felt compelled to write this review so I wouldn’t forget how wonderful the experience was. We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes and enjoy the warm hospitality of the staff. One small detail I especially appreciated was the built-in cutlery compartment on the table. It neatly popped open to reveal chopsticks, spoons, and tissues, so we never had to ask for anything. It’s clear the restaurant puts real thought into meeting customer needs. I highly recommend Tokyo Maki to anyone in the area looking for something new and delicious. I’m so glad we decided to give it a try — it truly made my day! 🙂

Conveniently located at 547 Flinders St., Tokyo Maki offers an honest dining experience that transports you straight to bustling Japan. Our recent visit we indulged in a huge sushi boat, alongside a medley of dishes including the vegetarian and prawn Gyoza, Chicken Katsu Don, and a seafood stir-fry, beef stir-fry, both bursting with flavor. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, showcasing Japanese cuisine. The generous portion sizes left my 6'5" son pleasantly surprised, as we found ourselves with an abundance of food for our table of six. The chicken skewers were particularly noteworthy, perfectly grilled and seasoned to perfection. Service at Tokyo Maki was exemplary; the staff was not only friendly but also remarkably efficient, ensuring our dining experience was seamless. We also appreciated the excellent value of the wine and beer selections. The ambiance of the restaurant was vibrant and packed with fellow diners enjoying their meals, which only added to the lively atmosphere. Given its popularity, I highly recommend making a reservation to secure your table. Located just a short stroll from the Crown complex, Tokyo Maki is a good honest feed.

I extensively researched the best Japanese restaurant that was the closest to my hotel before I settled on the Tokyo Maki. It had good recent reviews and lots of them. I ordered a beer, the nigiri entree and a chicken katsu curry. It took twenty minutes from me entering, to getting a beer into my hand. Then the sushi showed up, which was fine. It wasn't the worst but not the best either. It was ok. The real downer was the katsu curry that turned up. Honestly it was the worst katsu curry I've ever had. The chicken was decent enough but everything else was so bad. There was about 50ml of curry sauce in the bowl and it was just the weakest, tasteless dishwater I've ever had. Add that to the fact that it was obviously bulked up with vegetables (perhaps they had ran out of curry and didn't want to decline the order?!) such as broccoli, packed with onions, carrots and potato. It was very strange. It looks nice in the photo, so it was well presented but it was such a bad curry. Shame.

Had a really disappointing experience here today. Had heard online that this place was great for vegans and was super excited to try out their vegan menu. My partner and I both don't eat meat and we ordered the Gyoza Ramen and the Kimchi stew (both from the vegan menu). I made it really clear that both dishes were vegan and said this multiple times when ordering. However when the food came out, mine had pork, which the waiter noticed and took away. Then about 10 minutes later my partner's came and he bit into the gyoza to find it was chicken. This was really poor considering we do not eat meat and we had already been mucked around. We had to get the attention of the waiter who took the food away and apologised and replaced it, and later my food came too. I am not sure how vegan both of our dishes were (for example, was there fish sauce in my kimchi stew? or meat in the ramen broth?) and the staff did not apologise much to us.

Such a shame because the food was great, but this sort of practice is really dangerous especially to people with allergies. I would not recommend eating here if you have dietary...
