We have been to Miss Chu about 15 times in the past 4-5 weeks. 14 times to South Melbourne and 1 time to South Yarra (South Yarra is the very best — definitely go there if you have a choice). The staff at the South Yarra location are brilliant, and exempt from the below.
Note — The food is very good though, and is more like 4.5 / 5.
My reasoning for 1 star:
— Always tell us where to sit, when they don’t have any bookings, or many other people in the restaurant… and always as close to where the food comes out as possible… probably so they don’t have to put too much effort in.
— Made us sit down at a table, that was still dirty from the people who sat there before us… why would you tell us to sit there? — Then they were seemingly put out by me telling them that that table was dirty, so we moved.
— We always ask for take-away chop sticks - when we ask we always get a dirty look/ confused look... the chopsticks in the restaurant aren’t very good. They’re too fat, slippery, and most likely not too clean.
— After ordering take-away, when I arrived to collect our order, I was told, “we did it this time, but next time we won’t be able to put the spring onion on the side”. — apparently the manager (female manager) had told her to tell me that. This was after going there 14 times… and them doing it every other time. The reason we ask for it on the side is because my wife doesn’t like it, butI do, so to save confusion, I just ask for it on the side.
— When I asked for some extra fish sauce, and they told me, “there is already sauce in there… “ — I’m aware of that. That’s why I said, Extra.
— When we arrived at 8pm (mid-week), before even saying hello, we were told, "we're closing soon!".... Google says you close at 9pm. Pretty sure it says 9pm on the door at your restaurant as well. They clearly wanted to finish work early... so we ordered take-away because they certainly did not make us feel welcome.
— When we got take-away and they only gave us 1 pair of chopsticks when we ordered enough food for 3 people.
— We were told to sit at a table that was right next to another couple, when they were the only other people in the entire restaurant. So we asked if we could sit at a table that was facing out the window, because the outlook was nicer. They told us, “ok, but you’ll have to get up and order at the front”. (This was dinner time — 6.30pm). They usually ask people to order at the register at lunch time, not dinner.
— Brought out 3 serves of dumplings when we ordered 4 (the only food we ordered) and then got told that the 4th serving would be an 8 minute wait… after I had alerted them that we had only received 3 servings, which they didn’t believe initially — indicated by them checking the table, and then going to check the order, and then coming back to tell me the above. So we finished the 3 servings we had to wait about 8-10 minutes for 1 serving. I had to ask for more spring onion (which comes with it) because they didn’t bring any over, and had only given me enough for 1 serving for the other 3 servings we did get.
— Generally pretty rude female manager who never smiles or says hello. It seems as they its a chore or an inconvenience that we’re eating at their restaurant. If the food wasn’t good, I would definitely not have even gone back a 2nd time.
If South Melbourne were like the South Yarra location, I would eat there almost every night. But after everything above, I...

Read more$19.50 for the worst chicken pho. Miss Chu has taken a dive in the last year, and not in a good way. I visited more than an hour before closing time, all the seating was already packed inside. The staff member who served me was rushed like they were trying to close. So I decided to order take away. She then proceeded to serve an uber eats driver who was standing behind me and came in after me. I ordered the chicken pho, wow what a let down. This used to be great, not anymore! They’ve started putting broccoli in it, I’ve never had broccoli in pho and broccoli was not listed as an ingredient. They also just stuffed the sauce container in on top of the meat and forgot to give me any hoi sin, only chilli sauce was provided. The garnishes were just thrown in without any preparation, it’s like they were picked off a tree and just dropped in there, stalks and all. No care or effort had even been put into one of the most expensive pho’s you can buy in Australia. To add to the disappointment, the soup contained a huge amount of fat which left a visible fat ring around the take away container that it came in. I’ll never return, it’s far too expensive for what you get and even if it was cheaper, the quality borders...
