I found this restaurant after a quick google search of the best restaurants in the area and this place popped up, with a high number of positive reviews. Seeing I was in an area rich in multicultural flavour why not give an Afghanistan cuisine a go. Not being very sure on what to have we ordered the set menu “chefs banquet” as we both bought decent appetites after a big day at work.
The food was tasty but unfortunately banquet it was not. Entree was a few beef dumplings. Main was three different kebabs served with two types of rice, a sultanas and carrot version and the other with orange peel which was quite intense. Also served with eggplant dip and bread (which was very tasty and the hero of the meal). The salad was tiny and an afterthought. My biggest gripe would be that for $70 per head you’d probably want to increase the protein portion and possibly include a little dessert, as it didn’t feel like great value for money.
It was early evening and had the place to ourselves so can’t comment on atmosphere as it was just us. The maître d’ was very accommodating and everything served with a smile. He definitely didn’t forget to plug the QR code linking it to reviews, I understand the hustle and the high number of positive reviews. For me needs a little adjustment in protein portion for the $70 per head and you’d have a winner and probably a restaurant...

I can’t believe I’ve lived in Melbourne and only just discovered the 16 year old Salang Restaraunt in Dandenong – what an absolute gem! This Afghani restaurant offers a truly authentic and delicious experience that blew me away.
The food is nothing short of amazing. We were served two different types of rice – one subtly sweet with sultanas, and another beautifully aromatic with hints of orange – both were flavour-packed and perfectly cooked. The meats were tender and full of flavour: juicy chicken, succulent lamb, and mouth-watering mince kofta that melted in the mouth. Every dish was generous in portion and clearly made with care.
A special shout-out to the owner, Moqeen – such a warm and welcoming host. He took the time to explain the ingredients and cooking techniques, which added a lovely personal touch to our meal. His hospitality made the whole experience feel even more special.
If you haven’t been, go! Whether you’re dining in or looking for a venue that can cater to events up to 100 people, Salang is well worth your visit. You won’t be disappointed – I...
Read moreDandenong is a precinct for Afghani food and we always struggle to choose a restaurant, but we were lucky that a friend recommended Salang, and we were not disappointed. The food and service were excellent, and we do not need to bother trying to find the best Afghani restaurant any more - we've found it. We started with the Bolani bread and thankfully the owner told us not to eat too much as there was so much more to come. A couple of our group of 8 ordered tea, and it was served in this gorgeous tea set ... they felt like royalty drinking their tea. We enjoyed the manto dumplings drenched in a delicious yoghurt sauce, followed by a range of kebabs - they were all yummy - but the chicken was amazing. We also had 2 delicious rice palows - the classic qabuli, and an orange palow we had never tried before ... both equally delicious. We should have ordered some curries to go with it - next time. We love our eggplant - and the burani banjaan was a highlight - so delicious. We ended our meal with the crispy, sweet jalebis. We left very full and very happy. Thank you Moqeem for a...
