I rarely find the need to write a review, however I’m really disappointed in our treatment at this place today. We did everything we could on our end to meet their terms, which was arrive on time, spend 90mins there and then head off to enjoy the rest of our night elsewhere. It turned out to be a stressful waste of time! 5 of us arrived just before 5pm for our 5pm booking. I was told I couldn’t go in and had to wait to be seated, which I thought was odd seeing as one of our party was already waiting inside. We waited and were seated by 5:05pm. There was a glaring sign at the end of our table that there was a booking at 6:30. We were ready to order almost instantly and waited around for someone to acknowledge us. Restaurant was close to empty at this point with people trickling in. We flagged the same person who seated us and asked if she could take our order and she said she wasn’t a waiter and would get someone. 5:20 we finally had someone taking our order. He was lovely and apologetic for the wait. Food and drinks came out fast after this and the female wait staff was also fabulous. Unfortunately, just before 6:15pm Jenny (person who seated us) told us the next table booking had already arrived and we would need to leave soon. We only had a little bit left to drink and didn’t think much of it as our booking was until 6:30. Waiter came soon after at 6:15 and told us we could move to some high chairs outside and finish our drinks. We were with a 18mth old, had a pram and only one person had less than half a beer to drink. Moving all our stuff when we’re almost done was not something we were up for. Jenny came back and said ‘I told you that we need the table for 6:30’ and was quite abrupt and rude so at that point I had to jump in and told her it’s 6:15 not 6:30 and explained that they haven’t even tried to honour our 90mins by not serving us until 5:20 and now asking us to leave by 6:15 means we’ve really had the benefit of 1hr. It’s ridiculous to book the next table at exactly the 90min mark and that comes down to poor management. At the end of the day I have no issue if you want a time limit, but it’s on YOU to make sure you’re adhering to it and delivering at a pace consistent with meeting that time limit which clearly is not what happened today.
We left by 6:25 and I was even stopped while leaving because they thought I hadn’t paid which is so wild to me. If they paid some attention it was obvious some of our party was waiting at the bar to pay. Honestly just unbelievable! Don’t bother booking. It’s more stress...
Read moreAfter a casual walk through the city with my ederly disabled client, we stumbled across The Island, on a Friday, around 1230pm, and were pleasantly surprised to see a seat was readily available. The original lady that had greeted us, was pleasant, helpful and kind, untill unfortunately her lack of knowledge around people with disabilities let her down. Proceeding to expect my self, to push a wheelchair over steps, to access the garden area, with a prior conversation, if the area was wheel chair accessible . When explained it was unsafe to do so, I asked for another table more suitable and safer to access with the wheel chair. Her kind face soon turned sour, rolled her eyes at me, proceeded to storm through the restaurant, throw menus on a table out side and stated very firmly that no table service was available out Here, and walked away.
Absolutely disgusting behaviour, not once did I belittle her for not knowing safety issues, as her role isn't a support worker, tho I was shocked to my core when I realised she had no idea it was unsafe to push a wheelchair over steps ... 🤷♀️
Utterly defeated, my client wanted to leave. She felt like her wheel chair was an obsticle, and didn't want to create a scene. I asked her to let me speak to the manager, as it may just have been an honest mistake.
Jaz, the manager on at the time was nothing short of a human miracle. She had witnessed the whole situation unfold, so when I came to her to discuss the issue, she handled it so professionally. The kindness, compassion, and attention to detail are to be commended. Jaz went above and beyond to rectify the situation, single-handedly saved the review, and should be thanked considerably
We ordered 2 holumi burgers and some spiced choritzo, the food was incredible. Cooked to perfection and the perfect portion sizes. The prices, for the city, were very fair and reasonable.
Jaz. I personally want to thank you, as my client was left feeling happy, heard, and felt like she had resolved the issue. As a support worker, we endure different difficulties every day, and the way you cared and comforted my client was beyond measure.
Jaz, restored faith that just because a person is in a wheelchair, doesn't mean they don't deserve the same treatment or same service as an able body person's, and in turn, this has given The Island one of the most valuable staff members, and indeed, I will return, with clients...
Read moreArrived at 6pm for a booking for a table of 9 for a birthday celebration. Reservation card on table stated 6 guests. 3 menus whacked down on the table. 4 knives & 3 forks, empty salt & pepper shakers & no napkins in the caddy on the table. Well we’re off to a good start. First impressions and all that.
QR code ordering - ahhh hospitality at its finest right there.
Ordered a round of drinks from the tiny black and white code stuck to the side of the caddy… 23 minutes later drinks were plonked at the end of the tiled, unbalanced table and my son got covered in a pint. Asked the waiter for some napkins or a cloth to which he didn’t return with. (The entire evening we never saw him again) My husband had to go find some for himself. Meanwhile about $15 worth of the $21 cocktail that was ordered was spilt on the other waiters journey to our table & then on the table when it was placed down. (Tip: don’t look at the filled martini glass, look at where you’re going - the drink will move with you and not spill)! White wine that arrived at the table was warm & flat. (Must’ve poured it back in Murray Darling and had it delivered to the table).
Food came out in reasonable time by a handful of different waitstaff. Each meal handed to my husband seated at the end of the table and then passed down. (He must’ve had a QR code bubble above his head that the waitstaff only could see, as he’s the one who ordered our meals) again hospitality at its finest. We ordered a variety of different dishes, no complaints with food. (Thank you, to the probably never thanked kitchen crew).
Overall the experience was meh to say the least. Rarely do I look at reviews before dining out because every experience is someone else’s opinion. This being said having had this experience myself the review seemed fitting. The 1 star goes straight to the kitchen. No one else. The Maître D’ (term clearly used very lightly at the island) would probably be better suited BOH. The “resting b** face” & “I don’t want to be here attitude” was definitely not suited for a “first impression position”.
