Apologies for the in-depth review but here goes (TL:DR main course took 2 hours). We went here yesterday, Friday December 20th.
Some of us from work had organised a small (4 people) end of year catch up. It was last minute and Tiny's was one of the few places that had an opening - one of the attendees had been before and said the place was great.
3 of the 4 of us arrived at 12pm and we were shown to our reserved table. A very enthusiastic waiter greeted us, gave us water and took our drink orders - he very much seemed like he was running the place. It was also made very clear to us that our table has to be used by another party at 2pm, so we could only have a 2 hour sitting.
For what it's worth, most tables had people sitting at them, so it was busy but I wouldn't have said too busy. The fourth member of the party arrived at 12:10pm, right at the time our drinks arrived. The person who had been to Tiny's before recommended the Let Us Feed You - the full Tiny's experience.
The first round of food arrived around 12:30pm, which was chicken satay sticks, bread with butter, olives and a plate with pickles etc. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of chicken satay sticks, but everyone else said they were good and they didn't last long.
Then … nothing. We ordered another round of drinks but some of the drinks were wrong. We would occasionally see a waiter/waitress and ask about our food and would be told it was 'coming soon'. Finally around 1:45pm (after ordering at 12:10pm) we were able to get the attention of the waiter who greeted us at the beginning to ask where our food was. He said the kitchen was the issue and he would find out what was going on, then took some more drink orders. About 5 minutes later, we were given two sides - potatoes and salad. Both tasted nice. He followed up with us again as we still had no main course and I believe his words were "where's your chicken?" He said he would sort something for us, then asked if we would like anything else like some more potatoes and salad. We agreed to both.
At 2pm, we were able to get the attention of a waitress who we had spoken to previously and asked where the potatoes and salad were. She said we weren't allowed more potatoes, we could only have chips.
Finally at 2:05pm, we had chicken (albeit with no sides, as we had eaten them already) and we exchanged some jokes about how we were supposed to have left our table by 2pm. The chicken was nice. For what it's worth, the member of our party who recommended we order the 'Let Us Feed You' said it should have come with beef and broccolini as well - the waiter said it didn't.
Then around 2:15pm, the main waiter asked if we wanted some dessert, or digestifs. The table agreed to another round of drinks, at which point he essentially said we needed to move to a different table to have the drinks, so that he could re-allocate our table.
We changed tables and were having our last round of drinks when at 2:30pm, the same waitress who said we couldn't have more potatoes brought to our table a plate of … chicken satay sticks, the same food we had 2 hours prior. When we said we didn't want/need the chicken, she had a genuine look of disgust on her face like we had offended her and she walked away.
The atmosphere was good and the drinks were good (I also liked their whisky selection). The food was nice but nothing special and only gets 1 star because it took 2 hours to get a main course. We also felt that for $75 per person we should be getting more than rotisserie chicken, chicken satay sticks, potatoes, salad, olives, bread...
Read moreA last minute visit after a busy work day. I called ahead to see if I could get a booking. I was offered a bar seat which I appreciated as it was late notice. I arrived on time and was told by the tall bartender with a shaved head and glasses that you were full in a dismissive and arrogant fashion. The bar was empty and and the restaurant was 50% full I was surprised by the lack of warmth. I asked if he could check as I had called ahead. Reluctantly he did so and subsequently directed me to the bar. I was provided with a glass and no water and left to my own devices. No welcome, no discussion of market specials, no warmth. Finally after about 10 minutes a kind bartender asked if I would like a drink and to order.
Food: Oysters; fresh, delicious and nicely presented. I’ve never seen oysters served with their top shell. It makes the customer do unnecessary work for no reason. There is no aesthetic advantage in presentation.
$50 short rib was a disaster. It was served with an internal temperature below 40 deg. I was provided a silver butter knife to cut this. This would be fine if the short rib had been prepared properly and would slide off the bone. It was tough, seriously tough. I forced my way through one rib before waiving the white flag. It was a shame became the seasoning/rub was on point. This rib was clearly 45-65 minutes from appropriate cooking temperature. I was embarrassed on behalf of the kitchen. I provided feedback to the staff but didn’t want to make a fuss as i grew up in hospitality and sometimes we have off nights. It was alarming that no one in the kitchen tasted the rib and actually realised what was going on. This was a disaster of a dish.
Banana fritter - simple and tasty. It helped remove the unpleasant main meal experience.
The American/Canadian bartender saved the evening through a genuine warmth and interest that was otherwise lacking from walking in. Finally someone who understands the importance of small gestures to make a customer feel welcome! It was clear that he had a superior skill and subsequently I ordered 4-5 drinks as a result of this own factor.
Summary:
This was a 3/5 performance. 4.5/5 is not deserved and the manager should review this in terms of providing direct feedback across the board. The warm and talented bar tender along with fresh produce and a simple dessert saved a nightmare of an evening.
I ordered Thai delivery after spending $158. An elegant and sophisticated venue is capable of better and I hope this can help provide some suggestions to improve as it’s...
Read moreNow....I stumbled on to this place. Intention was to walk down the terrace to a takeaway joint. The music was pumping enough to catch my ears so I followed the pop sounds which revealed an entry into an unknown bar....whaaaaatt! How did I not know this place existed. 😳. Anywho....I walk in dressed in thongs, jeans and a tee, warm welcome instantly. 'Sit anywhere'...she said. So I did. Meanu...extensive. drinks list...massive. "The emperor pliz"...I said....."and a glass of that hazy ipa mvinyo". As I waited, she asked if I needed anything...while yes...do you do a warm bowl of water with lemon for a hand wash....no problem....and it came. 😀. However, (coz perfection is nearly impossible in good food business) she kindly..and I mean kindly alerted me to the waiter who got my food order wrong. "No problem" I said. Paid the difference..move on. Then noticed dough being kneed(ed) by the chef..I was like what! You make your bread at the restaurant? He said " we try"...as the cool chunes came out the clear sonos ceiling speakers (gangster ol skool), my emperor fish on a plate arrived. So I sat where I was and "she" got my stuff from my original table and brought it to my new plate location. So I indulged, including an added slice of a baked bread sample with their chimichuri spread. She then topped it off with another hand wash bowl n lemon and a shelter pale ale.
The emperor had pickled grapes bruhhhh!!!!
You get what you pay for people....not perfection. Worth every...
