Suddenly Pyrmont has gone from, "lots of places to eat, none of which you actually WANT to eat at", to OUTSTANDING. I'm never leaving Pyrmont again. I don't know what magic they do in the kitchen, but Calla is unbelievable good. Always try the specials, the current one is a truffle linguini. Oh. My Gosh Sensational, smoky creaminess with super crispy little bits of something. It blew my mind. seriously, the best pasta I think i've had in years since the pork one at Big Poppas, which this eclipses. Have it with a glass of the Viognier. They have one round table that sits 5, so its good for a business lunch, if you want something a little different from a city restaurant, or pub food. Don't be put off by the sparse decor, the food and excellent service will soon have you warmed up. Very limited wine list (which I applaud as it means the wine will always be fresh. No 1 day old glasses of vinegar here! Thank you Calla!).
My only compliant is that Calla is only open for breakfast and long lunch until 3.30pm. They don't do dinner. At least it means I don't need to choose between here and Bar Clementine in the...
Read moreToday was our first time dining in at Calla. It is a hidden gem in the heart of pyrmont. Located directly above the light rail station, it has both the charm and food of an upper class dining experience. From the moment we walked in our family was welcomed and made to feel at home. For anyone with young children you know how hard it can be to take your kids along to a restaurant fearing the havoc that may ensue. Vicky and Max the amazing and talented owners of Calla took four kids in their stride and straight away brought out chips and colouring pencils and paper which absolutely blew us away! With the kids occupied and under control we were then able to enjoy the selection of appetizers including home made sourdough and butter as well as an exquisite garden salad. When it came time for the mains, we took a chance on the seafood fettucine and supreme chicken. These are 2 dishes we would definitely try again. For dessert we were treated to freshly baked Madelines with strawberries and fresh vanilla cream. One of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had and will definitely...
Read moreFour stars because the food was fantastic. The crispy salmon was delicious, and the salmon terrine was even better. Everything on our plates was wonderful 👍
Our impression was that the food's excellent, but it's almost like the rest is a bit of an afterthought - kind of incongruous. Which is a shame, because the rest is just as important. Everyone was friendly and cordial, but it took a couple of tries to flag down a waitress to take our order, despite being one of only two groups in the cafe (and the others had pretty much finished eating). Also had to order our water and coffee twice, and the coffee was bitter...
It's a nice sized space with a lot of light and a bit of a view, but at the moment it feels pretty stark - can't put my finger on why this is the case, but it didn't feel very 'warm'.
Well worth a visit for the food, we'd definitely come back...
