We visited Fresh Beef Hot Pot in Burwood and were thoroughly impressed by the quality, freshness, and attention to detail. This restaurant brings true Chaoshan-style hot pot to Sydney, offering a dining experience that is both authentic and refined. It’s also halal-friendly, which makes it a fantastic option for those seeking quality and inclusivity.

The highlight of our visit was the signature Book of Secrets. The presentation was exceptional — thinly sliced, beautifully marbled beef layered elegantly like the pages of a book. Each slice was freshly hand-cut, and remarkably, you could flip the plate upside down without the meat falling off. Once cooked in the rich and aromatic broth, the beef was incredibly tender and full of flavour.

The selection of broths and dipping sauces allowed for a fully customisable experience, and every ingredient on the table reflected premium quality. From the fresh vegetables to the side dishes, everything was thoughtfully prepared and served with care.

Food is average and doesn't the justify the expensive price. The service was appalling, if you don't speak Chinese then good luck you won't receive any service, every time we asked the staff for something they would just keep redirecting it to another staff.

Then this happened, we finished eating we chose to pay by card, the lady then gave us the eftpos machine and after paying we chose the option to "Not print a receipt" and handed the machine back to the lady. The lady then typed in the figure again and gave it back to us and told us to pay again because 'it didn't go through'. We kept telling her that the payment went through and that there is an error from her end, and she did not want to listen to us. She then called the manager (who was very aggressive and rude). He did not even check with her and DID NOT listen to us at all, he told us that we didn't pay and we needed to try the card again. We couldn't check our banking app because it was under maintenance. After going back and forth we decided to let another customer pay (who was Chinese), he's pay didn't work so FINALLY the manager realised there was an error from their end. He then let us go without saying thank you or apologizing for wasting our time.

The restaurant itself is quite small and generally very busy. The wait itself to get seated was approximately an hour or more. However, that didn’t detract from the overall positive experience. The beef was great, it was fresh and definitely worth the money. The sauce bar was although limited, was good (especially the house sauce).

The reason for the 3 star review instead of a 4 star, would be the service. It was difficult to attract the attention of staff to request for additional menu items. It was also hard to identify when items arrived at the table as nothing was said.
