Avoid Heno & Rey – Rude Staff and Subpar Food
We dined at Heno & Rey on Christmas Eve, and it was easily one of the worst restaurant experiences we’ve ever had. From the lacklustre food to the appallingly rude staff, the entire evening was a complete disappointment.
The food itself was “meh” at best—bland, uninspired, and definitely not worth the price. We ordered several different dishes, hoping to enjoy a variety of flavours, but nothing stood out. The quality was mediocre and didn’t justify the hype or cost.
The real issue, however, was the service. When we wanted to order empanadas, we were shocked to find there was no flexibility. As a couple, we didn’t want four empanadas from the adult menu and instead asked to order the kids' portion, which is identical except it includes two instead of four and costs 25% less. This is a perfectly reasonable request, especially considering the amount of food we had already ordered. Instead of accommodating us, the server literally laughed in my face and flat-out refused, claiming it wasn’t allowed.
Not only was this response completely unprofessional, but it’s also ridiculous—of course you should be able to order a smaller portion of something, especially when you’ve already ordered a significant amount of food. The server’s attitude was dismissive and rude, making an already frustrating situation even worse.
When my partner attempted to order something else and requested a minor change to the dish, the server informed us that no alterations could be made. The entire process of ordering felt like pulling teeth. The server’s behaviour, combined with the inflexible policies, made it clear that customer satisfaction is the last priority here.
The manager and cook didn’t help matters either. The lack of effort to address these issues and the hostile attitude of the entire team made it painfully obvious that the problems at Heno & Rey go beyond just one person.
If you’re looking for a pleasant dining experience with good food and decent service, do yourself a favour and go somewhere else. Heno & Rey is not worth your time, money, or...
Read moreWe booked the shared paella experience for a colleague’s leaving lunch, paying ahead for what should have been a smooth and enjoyable meal. Sadly, it turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had.
The service overall was appalling:
The server was inexperienced, which would have been fine had she not been so rude.
I wasn’t given a dessert menu, so I ordered the Basque cheesecake. When it arrived, it was a tiny sliver topped with fairy floss and rhubarb. I asked how much it was, and after checking, the server told me $17. I said I wasn’t comfortable paying that much for such a small serve and asked if I could return it. She said no because the chef had already prepared it. To top it off, the cheesecake was clearly thawed from frozen, based on its texture.
They forgot our sangria and Patatas Bravas, which were listed in the $19pp package. When we asked, the server claimed these items were part of a more expensive package—despite being clearly included in the one we booked.
Eventually, they admitted the mistake but only offered two serves of churros as compensation, which was nowhere near enough for a table of 14.
When I asked if we could resolve the issue by removing the cheesecake and the one set of churros already ordered (before we knew free ones would be provided) from the bill, I was told no. The manager, who was right there, insisted new churros were already being made and that he’d already “cleared it” with my colleague.
The restaurant offers a beautiful semi-alfresco dining experience, but was almost empty during lunch. Now I understand why. It speaks volumes when a place is more focused on squeezing money out of customers than creating an experience that would make them want to return.
I paid for my items because I’m not one for confrontation, but I left feeling completely exploited. Paying for items we didn’t receive and being treated so dismissively when we tried to find a fair solution was unacceptable.
I wouldn’t recommend this...
Read moreMy friend & I tried to dine with on a Friday night before a show at the Arena, however it was a shocking disappointment.
From the start, it is clear that the restaurant was ill-equipped to handle the demands of a busy Friday night, especially with a theater and arena located nearby. Despite booking an early table for 5:30 pm, it took an unreasonable 45 minutes for our drinks to arrive. When I inquired about the delay, the waitress was unable to provide a clear explanation, which only added to our frustration.
The fact that another couple who arrived 15 minutes after us received their food and drinks within 15 minutes only serves to highlight the incompetence of your staff and the restaurant's lack of organization. As a paying customer, I have every right to expect a timely and efficient service, especially when we told the staff that we had a show to attend.
Despite our repeated inquiries about the status of our food order, we were given unsatisfactory answers that only added to the confusion and frustration. It was only after we approached the executive food director that we were informed of a system glitch in the ordering system that required us to reorder. However, by this point, it was clear that the restaurant was not capable of serving us in time for our show.
It is incredibly frustrating when a restaurant fails to communicate effectively with its customers and fails to acknowledge its lack of trained staff. It is unacceptable that we were made to wait for an hour without any clear explanation or apology for the delay. It is also disappointing that the restaurant did not take responsibility for its incompetence and instead blamed it on a system glitch.
Overall, based on your experience, I would not recommend Heno & Rey to others. The lack of communication, poor service, and incompetent staff are all significant red flags that suggest the restaurant is not up to the standards that one would expect from a quality...
