On the good side, the Alte Fuchs is a traditional and well-established restaurant in Salzburg and attracts not only tourists, but also some locals like myself. The ambient is really nice, rustic but with a dash of irony, and the service was good and waiters friendly. Good beers and other local drinks add to the good aspects.
On the down-side, (food-wise), we had spinach dumplings with cheese sauce, wild boar schnitzel on cabbage and pork roast (Schweinsbraten), all rather traditional, not too sophisticated dishes. The spinach dumplings were served cold, but upon complaint immediately taken back and warmed up with an apology; still, they were swimming in a pool of liquid butter; the wild boar schnitzel contained a lot of cartilage and was of poor quality, also very heavy and clearly warmed up after having been fried a long time ago; the cabbage looked unappealing and was boiled to death; the Schweinsbraten was alright, over-all, the quality does not justify the prices. None of our dishes were prepared freshly (we got there around 2 pm, so not at the typical lunch-time, but still).
Conclusion: not the worst experience ever, but not that great either - next time in the area, we will try...
Read moreWell I’m happy to miss either Mozart birthplace or residence for a meal here. The late lunch/snack is lovely. I was attracted by the fox and the soft pretzel. Many beers are available but it’s also family friendly with many children :) There’s a moderate wait for food. Salad is if large portion suitable of the price. The fried pear is really interesting, and goat cheese is super, creamy and packed with flavor. With the red and green grapes and leaves and cucumber and colorful sweet peppers, the bowl is five of your five today. The dressing (Lemon Mustard Vinaigrett?) is light and delightful. The walnuts add a nutty texture contrasting the fresh veggies and soft cheese balls. So harmonious. I’ll try to replicate this at home ^^ Soft pretzel is beautiful as imagined— how I miss a decent pretzel in the UK! It’s properly lye-bathed, elastic, chewy, salted, not soaked in oil, and toasted warm. Would love to try the main menu one day. (No wonder it’s fully booked...
Read moreAll I can say is that if you do not come here for dinner, you wasted the chance to try something spectacular.
After a long and rainy summer evening in August, I ended up dining alone in this marvellous restaurant.
I have always been self-conscious about eating alone, as I am, at my core, a social adventurer. But honestly, hunger was winning, and this place came well recommended.
My dinner started with a rich and dry local white wine, whose name I am unable to pronounce, but it was the first on the list; a plate of cheese and fruits was followed by the most incredible boiled beef you have ever tasted (and if you haven’t tried it yet, by all means, do try it), as a side the meat came with roasted potatoes, spinach and an onion apple jam.
The food was cooked to perfection, and most of it was tasty. I do not have a sweet tooth, so dessert was a strong doppio expresso.
I do recommend making a...
