I was very much looking forward to staying at this hotel, as they partner with the Salzburg Festspiele, and it was recommended for it's location and history. I asked for a quiet room, but got one facing the street. Behind the street is a 70-some meter mountain wall, amplyfing all noise from the street and the church - which is next door - and which starts it's bells at 7 in the morning. Room got incredibly warm (heat wave) - and only one fan is provided, no air-con. I had to open the window during the night, waking every 10 minutes from drunken shouting outside. The carpet in the room was dirty and stained, the hot/cold faucets in the shower and sink were opposite, knobs on bathroom cabinet and dresser were missing, the skirting board (Bodemformteil) had come off from the walls.
I needed help with understanding the information on my concert ticket. It was in German, and highly detailed (Covid- regulations) - I asked one of the staff to translate a few bits for me. My question was "What time do I need to be there?" She could not understand this, but replied "Oh no, there are no bees, no bees!" And made a "bzz"-sound, and she was not joking. I am working on my German, but you partner with the festival, and it would be very helpful if you knew just a little bit more English!
This can all be tossed aside, but this can't: Since there is no breakfast, guest are invited to go to the sister hotel, Hotel Stein, down the street. I popped by in the evening to have a look at the venue (roof-top restaurant), it was so crowded, you couldn't move around. I'm sure it's disinfected to some extent after it closes and before it opens, and I'm not hysterical about the pandemic, but there were no covid-measures, 100-150 people standing around, no masks, no distance, nothing. It just felt so very irresponsible. On the bright side, there is a pretty little patio in the back, and the church yard behind the hotel, where Mozart's family's graves are, is a tranquil and very...
Read moreBeautiful hotel in a great location. Great little bar and record shop across the street. Plenty of restaurants and cafes just steps from the front door.. The rooms were quite nice. No air conditioning so consider the forecast when booking. Our last day was near 90F. They do provide a beat up fan, but it was a bit uncomfortable sleeping when temps are high. When temps are cooler, you can open the windows and watch all the activity on the street below. Trash trucks and street sweepers roll through very early and the bell tower next door will remind you of the time, so light sleepers beware. The WiFi did not work the entire stay despite alerting the front desk. We had a great experience right up until check out. We needed to leave for the airport at 8am, but reception wasn’t open yet to check out even though the reception worker was there and aware we were trying to leave. We left the keys at the desk, but as we were loading into the car she was very rude and started accusing us of trying to steal. We owed $28 in city tax and were by no means trying to avoid payment. Quite the opposite. At all of our other stops on our family vacation, the hotels had collected the city tax at check in and we weren’t made aware that we still owed a balance. Reception is closed all night and doesn’t open until 8am, so we weren’t sure how the process was supposed to work. That was an unfortunate way to end a fantastic stay in a...
Read moreDo yourself a favor and avoid this hotel. If it were a cheap 2-star hotel, this review might be different. But Boutiquehotel Amadeus advertises itself as a 4 star hotel (and is expensive, within that category). Let me start with the only good thing about it: the location. Now, on to a much bigger list, all the reasons to avoid this hotel. Everything in the two-bedroom suite was old, rickety, loud, lights don't work properly, walls are scuffed, everything permeated by a musty old sweat smell. Visible mold (and strong moldy smell) in the bathroom areas. There are steps between the bedrooms, the hallway and the bathroom. There is even a bright motion activated light in the hallway to make sure anybody going to the bathroom wakes other people up. There is no AC, only loud portable fans, and you can't open windows because it is so loud outside. The reception lady couldn't have been less interested in welcoming us, the only thing she wanted was to let us know that there were croissants available in the morning but you could only take one per person. That's what they meant by "including breakfast". Reception closes at 6pm, btw, and then there is nobody around, quite literally. Note; when checking out, we explained some of what was wrong with the room, and they offered a very small, pointless discount. Note: we still paid way too much. Salzburg is a lovely city, but this is a...
