All about the wonderful, friendly service at this traditional-style cafe in the hipsterish, still gentrifying end of the 4th district. Coffee is just okay, but the ‘Oriental’ breakfast plate was decent, and the serving size generous. If you are expecting to find newspapers from around the world, sorry! There are only German-language dailies available which is unlike other more renowned traditional cafes in this city. But Cafe Goldegg is a great place to linger for a long gossip session with your pals, or for a cosy-up with your fave magazine or book, or while vlogging/blogging/social media trolling as you people watch. The small one-cubicle toilets add interest in and amongst a couple of other features like the old heaters which may or may not be functioning. There is just one (1) toilet for the Damen (women) and one for the Herrera (men). For those who are social media hacks, there is an extremely Insta-friendly room that’s separated from the main cafe and is available for functions for a minimum spend. As for the general ambience, the frayed seating and general decor need some updating and maintenance, as does the big clock that seems to have stopped running some moons ago. For the social media die-hards, recall that this cafe has featured on numerous local tv/screen sets and such like.

The Cafe Goldegg established in 1910 is a stylish Viennese coffee house with long tradition at the corner of Argentinierstraße and Goldeggasse. This coffee place is often used as filming location and was a meeting place for many groups in history, and you can really feel the historic ambiance here. The waiters are nice and give you the time you need for whatever reason you came here. We like to play Scrabble here for instance. And everybody who does scrabble in a cafe knows practically you only can do it with pleasure in certain cafés, as it need a special setting wherein you are given enough time to do so. However, for desserts we had a chocolate tart and a Punschschnitte, one is this pink Austrian desserts filled with rum cream and coated with pink sugar. We had a Kleiner Brauner and a tea and enjoyed or stay quite much, as here off the beaten track you travel back in time to the days of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy and can have a really good and relaxing time while you stay here in the Argentinierstraße, a long street in the Viennese Inner District of Wieden, named after the Republic of Argentina donated a large sum to the then young Republic of Austria after the First World War. This place is a great cafe! From Vienna with Love! Dr. Dr. Immanuel Fruhmann

Was about to rate this place 5 stars until the bill came. We had ordered the "goulash with bread rolls" (note the plural) for 14.90, but on the bill were charged 14.90 plus an extra 2.30 for bread. When we asked about this, the server said it was because we received two bread rolls and the goulash only included one. Not true according to the menu, but regardless we had never asked for anything extra? The server doubled down that it didn't matter at this point since we ate both! A few minutes after we sat back down looking visibly upset and starting writing this review lol, the server returned and threw a few coins at the table and halfheartedly said "thank you." Also, she had verbally asked us for a tip (rather than just showing options on the card-reader) in a way that felt a bit awkward, but which I didn't feel upset about until the bread conversation. My original review below, since I really did like the food! : very cute interior (flared up my dust allergies though!) and good food. Goulash was a bit over salted, but liver dumpling soup, camembert/apple/cranberry panini, and sachertorte were delightful.

As a place to have breakfast as a tourist, I would not recommend! The cafe’s interior was of a classic Viennese style, but was quite old and featured uncomfortable seating due to the restrictions of space. Our server was nice initially and spoke English, but slowly stopped speaking to us in English and ended up speaking completely in German, to which we struggled to maintain a coherent conversation with understanding. This was quite ambiguous, and it constrained our ability to ask questions about breakfast options, leading us to guess what we were ordering.

Unfortunately, like other reviewers, we did have extra items added to our bill without explanation, as one of our breakfast bundles ended up costing over €4-5 more, as two separate bread buns were added as a cost we did not know about. The orange juice was more expensive than the price described on the menu too, with both additional costs not explained by our server, with whom we tried to communicate with when paying. She also completely cut off any further communication with us in English, whilst also monologuing in German, until we said how much we wanted to pay, in English.

Overall, the food was average for what it was, and it was an experience that was hindered by the lack of apparent enthusiasm to conversate in English, despite the mutual understanding that we were tourists and knew little German. This continued even after we were greeted and spoken to...

I visited the café on October 1st. I ordered the liver dumpling soup (a strange combination) and something sliced that was floating in the soup (maybe yellow carrot?). The taste had strong stock cubes—it even overpowered the taste of the liver. I also ordered the Early Riser with cottage cheese—the carrot was dried out (not freshly grated), and the cucumber skin was dry too, as if taken from a stale sandwich. The bread didn’t taste fresh, and one of the sandwiches was completely soggy. The balsamic sauce on the tomatoes with mozzarella soaked the entire paper napkin that held the chia, which was covering the grapes (never seen fruit poured over chia in yogurt before). The waiter who was working his first day tried really hard—well done. Another waiter was not very friendly when taking my soup order and, instead of suggesting something to go with it, reacted to my nervous “Is that all?” by saying nothing. I had to order the bread with cottage cheese later. Out of all the food on the plates, only the tomatoes were tasty. The orange juice (which the waiter said they squeeze in the morning) arrived very late and only after I reminded them, and they said they were preparing it (to which I replied—didn’t you say you squeeze it in the morning?). All of this cost me €19.90. Once again, I realized that a positive Google rating can be...
