This was my second time visiting this place. The first time I had Schnitzel and Gulash, which were pretty good. This time I had Tafelspitz which was very very good, and a moderately good fried chicken. However, there are two big issues with this restaurant, which has made sure that I will never return to this place again.

The tafelspitz (32 euros) has an option where you could add 14 euros so that two people could eat. We were three people, we ordered tafelspitz for two, and one other menu. Naturally this is what we expected.

But the waiter charged us 64 euros for two tafelspitz, as well as the third menu, and said that we ordered two tafelspitz, and that we should have ordered “one for two” as if I don’t know how to speak English. Dude, I am a native english speaker, and I know what I said. I said A tafelspitz for TWO. Which means two people. The waiter tried to blame us for ordering the wrong thing although it was clear he was the one who misheard. If it was unclear, it was his job to double check, which he clearly did not do.

Although the mistake cost us much more than we expected, we still tried to tip the normal amount (between 5-10% as the people who lived a long time in Vienna have recommended). We did not want to ruin the evening. The first time when I visited this restaurant this did not happen. But this particular waiter started to “teach” us as if it were my first time tipping in Vienna saying “usually tipping starts with 10%” and “recommended” (although not putting the payment through until we agreed to 10%) we do that.

Having conversed with many native Austrians who have lived in Vienna for a long time, I KNEW, and have never experienced the waiter REQUIRING guests to pay “at least more than 10%” as the normal tip rate is between 5-10% at the maximum. But knowing we were not satisfied with the service as the waiter was the one who took the wrong order, it was absurd that he was requiring that we pay at least 10% tip for the restaurant. If you took the wrong order, this was not the amount of tip you deserved.

I had no intention of ruining a good evening, so I just opted to pay and leave, but really, this was the worst experience of dining in Vienna, since we felt we were ripped off and had to end a good evening with good food with a sour...

Our visit was the worst we had in our lifetime in a restaurant due to the very rude behaviour of the owner Mario Plachutta. It’s really a shame that this guy has restaurants but there is an explanation since the fame and the recipes come from his father who was the founder!

So please stop visiting this restaurant! There are plenty of restaurants in Vienna with equally good food!

I will explain why I am writing this. We had a reservation for 3 at 2:30 at New Year. We arrived on time, and they gave us a table for 2. This table was in a row of tables where you sit very close to other guests and they put the two of us on the one side on the couch where we couldn’t actually fit.

We asked very politely our waiter to change the table since we have booked a table for 3. He said that we are right and that in about 5 minutes he will put us at another table for 3. We thanked him. Then another man came angry towards us and he said that the place is very busy and we should either sit there or wait at the bar for another table. We told him that we just want the table we have booked for 3 and that we couldn’t fit in this tiny table and he started yelling and saying “you are wasting my time” “ everybody wants to eat here so you either do what I am saying or leave” We asked him who is he and he proudly said that he is the owner of the whole chain and he said again « you are wasting my time” “ nobody talks to me” “ I putting the rules here” while we were just saying him that we wanted a table for 3. The truth is that although the healthy reaction would be to have a fight with him we were speechless by this behaviour and also we decided to be smart and wait at the bar for a new table since we were hungry and it would be difficult to find a table somewhere else in such a busy day. In less than 3 minutes they gave us a nice table so there was no point to have such rude behaviour in a festive day!

The food was good and we also had a very attentive and kind waiter, so if it wasn’t for the owner we would have a great experience.

But since the owner is such a rude person I will never suggest to any of my friends and followers to visit Plachutta restaurants. There are many other places in Vienna with the same and even...

The traditional Austrian meal was definitely the most hyper part of the evening: the mashed potatoes were mind-blowingly smooth and creamy, and I greatly enjoyed my Sirloin steak; the goose liver with cranberry sauce presented in the form of a creme brulee was casually average, and the schnitzel, while being nothing to scoff at, also hadn't made any memorable impressions. The unfortunate part came in the form of the service. Beginning with a chaotic search for someone to talk to regarding our reservation and getting re-directed three times, followed by a laid-off but somewhat distant catering, the finishing touch was the constant twenty-minute pause between every inquiry we had. While we managed to share the foie-gras and have a glass of wine each within the first hour, with our mains following closely behind, the second hour and a half was spent completely trying to get the dessert to our table. As we asked for a repeat regarding the wine before our mains came, I was determined to enjoy my proteins with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Surprisingly, the next fifteen minutes of mine were spent drilling holes into the back of the waiter’s head and my steak chilling in the open before we could ask about the wine again. Afterward, it was ten minutes of trying to catch any waiter’s eyes to ask for the dessert card. Another ten minutes passed before we obtained it. Twenty-five minutes later we acquired the mouth-watering sorbets and about five minutes after finishing them we finally got the Turkish coffee. Hilariously enough, the bill came with no delays. The overall atmosphere was very inviting and welcoming thanks to the open green-furnished outdoor seating and a fleeting summer evening spent at a somewhat right place. I do whish the service had been slightly more attentive and sharp in terms of timing and hospitality, but the offered menu managed to preserve the aftertaste of the dinner in flattering and optimistic tones.

Lovely food, disappointing end to the experience We had the pleasure of trying two of Vienna’s most iconic dishes — the famous Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz served in a copper pot, accompanied by bone broth, root vegetables, apple-horseradish, chive sauce, marrow bone, hashbrowns, and toasted dark bread. Both were absolutely delicious — rich in flavour and beautifully presented. They were definitely worth the price for the quality and the experience. We arrived quite hungry and left satisfied. The atmosphere was charming, and the light mist from the outdoor seating made it especially enjoyable during the early summer heat of June. It was the perfect lunch after visiting the nearby Albertina. Service was attentive and pleasant—at first. Unfortunately, the ending spoiled what could’ve been a perfect experience. While we were still finishing our meal, the waiter abruptly brought over the bill — unrequested — along with the card machine, and pointed out that the tip was not included. It felt rushed and pushy, as though we were being asked to leave. When I mentioned I wasn’t finished, there was no apology or effort to make things right. I felt pressured into tipping, which was upsetting. In my country, tipping is optional and a way to show appreciation — not something expected or forced. After that, the waiter never returned to check on us. When we left and offered a polite thank you, he didn’t even acknowledge us. This wasn’t a young or inexperienced server, which made the lack of courtesy even more disappointing. A bit of retraining in customer service would go a long way. All in all, the food and ambiance were outstanding, but the ending left a bitter taste. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback on board — the dining experience deserves better.
