This was my second time visiting this place. The first time I had Schnitzel and Gulash, which were pretty good. This time I had Tafelspitz which was very very good, and a moderately good fried chicken. However, there are two big issues with this restaurant, which has made sure that I will never return to this place again.
The tafelspitz (32 euros) has an option where you could add 14 euros so that two people could eat. We were three people, we ordered tafelspitz for two, and one other menu. Naturally this is what we expected.
But the waiter charged us 64 euros for two tafelspitz, as well as the third menu, and said that we ordered two tafelspitz, and that we should have ordered “one for two” as if I don’t know how to speak English. Dude, I am a native english speaker, and I know what I said. I said A tafelspitz for TWO. Which means two people. The waiter tried to blame us for ordering the wrong thing although it was clear he was the one who misheard. If it was unclear, it was his job to double check, which he clearly did not do.
Although the mistake cost us much more than we expected, we still tried to tip the normal amount (between 5-10% as the people who lived a long time in Vienna have recommended). We did not want to ruin the evening. The first time when I visited this restaurant this did not happen. But this particular waiter started to “teach” us as if it were my first time tipping in Vienna saying “usually tipping starts with 10%” and “recommended” (although not putting the payment through until we agreed to 10%) we do that.
Having conversed with many native Austrians who have lived in Vienna for a long time, I KNEW, and have never experienced the waiter REQUIRING guests to pay “at least more than 10%” as the normal tip rate is between 5-10% at the maximum. But knowing we were not satisfied with the service as the waiter was the one who took the wrong order, it was absurd that he was requiring that we pay at least 10% tip for the restaurant. If you took the wrong order, this was not the amount of tip you deserved.
I had no intention of ruining a good evening, so I just opted to pay and leave, but really, this was the worst experience of dining in Vienna, since we felt we were ripped off and had to end a good evening with good food with a sour...
Read moreOur visit was the worst we had in our lifetime in a restaurant due to the very rude behaviour of the owner Mario Plachutta. It’s really a shame that this guy has restaurants but there is an explanation since the fame and the recipes come from his father who was the founder!
So please stop visiting this restaurant! There are plenty of restaurants in Vienna with equally good food!
I will explain why I am writing this. We had a reservation for 3 at 2:30 at New Year. We arrived on time, and they gave us a table for 2. This table was in a row of tables where you sit very close to other guests and they put the two of us on the one side on the couch where we couldn’t actually fit.
We asked very politely our waiter to change the table since we have booked a table for 3. He said that we are right and that in about 5 minutes he will put us at another table for 3. We thanked him. Then another man came angry towards us and he said that the place is very busy and we should either sit there or wait at the bar for another table. We told him that we just want the table we have booked for 3 and that we couldn’t fit in this tiny table and he started yelling and saying “you are wasting my time” “ everybody wants to eat here so you either do what I am saying or leave” We asked him who is he and he proudly said that he is the owner of the whole chain and he said again « you are wasting my time” “ nobody talks to me” “ I putting the rules here” while we were just saying him that we wanted a table for 3. The truth is that although the healthy reaction would be to have a fight with him we were speechless by this behaviour and also we decided to be smart and wait at the bar for a new table since we were hungry and it would be difficult to find a table somewhere else in such a busy day. In less than 3 minutes they gave us a nice table so there was no point to have such rude behaviour in a festive day!
The food was good and we also had a very attentive and kind waiter, so if it wasn’t for the owner we would have a great experience.
But since the owner is such a rude person I will never suggest to any of my friends and followers to visit Plachutta restaurants. There are many other places in Vienna with the same and even...
