My friend and I love trying different restaurants in Vienna and usually have wonderful experiences. Unfortunately, our visit to San Carlo Ristorante was extremely disappointing. I had called well in advance to reserve a table inside, especially since it was windy. Upon arrival, we were told no such reservation existed, and a waiter rudely offered us an outdoor table instead. When I mentioned I had reserved an indoor table, he simply rolled his eyes and dismissed me. Not exactly a warm welcome.
I reluctantly sat outside while waiting for my friend, and multiple staff assured us that we would be moved indoors as soon as a table became available. We waited nearly 30 minutes without any update. Shockingly, a couple who arrived after us, with no reservation and requested to be inside, was immediately offered a table inside. At this point I confronted the staff and they suddenly “found” us a table indoors. This treatment felt blatantly discriminatory. My friend and I are both women of color, and while one kind waitress did her best to help, her efforts were undermined by her male colleagues. The overall behavior from the waitstaff made it very clear that we were not welcome.
The food itself was underwhelming, and to add insult to injury, the dessert menu we requested never arrived. At that point, we paid and left.
To the management: Hospitality is about respect and inclusion. The way we were treated was unacceptable, and your male staff, in particular, demonstrated behavior that has no place in this industry. We will not be returning, and I sincerely hope you do better for...
Read moreMixed dining experience..... Essentially I can summarise all the reviews on this page for this restaurant. If you're in a rush, don't go here if it's busy. If you have a good experience, it'll be great, bad and it'll be atrocious! Our experience wasn't too bad, but we were surrounded by people waiting more than an hour and a half for their food. We were last in and waited just over 45 minutes.
The food was quite nice, nothing special but quite nice.
Stood outside the restaurant waiting for our reservation to be recognised, and someone walks up behind us. The waiting staff called them forward saying "they have a reservation". I said "as do we". They clearly knew them and seated their mates above all others.
What really troubled me was the attitude of "tough s+&t" from the waiting staff when people complained about waiting nearly two hours for their meal. No money was given off their bill, even when people questioned what the cover charge was and had been waiting for 2hrs, they were given a short snappy response about this being normal and them having a small kitchen.
The beer and wine sizes were also tiny for the price and not comparable to anywhere else we ate in Vienna.
I personally wouldn't go back to the restaurant, despite the food...
Read moreAs a tourist, I have been to many restaurants in Vienna. But, this one was definitely the worst. Here are the facts : The food is not bad. But, The service is awful : we chose our plates on the menu, but the waiter kept recommending others. Finally, we chose one on the menu (Spaghetti pescatore) and one recommended (“Ling mazzancolle”, whatever that means). The two plates were made of more or less the same ingredients, except for salsa. Wait for the bill. Spaghetti : 17,50 € “Ling mazzancole” : 28,50 € !!! (Not on the menu, not mentioned before and definitely NOT worth it) Moreover, on the an inexplicable amount of 3,8 € which the waiter explained that was for the flatware !!! And finally, on top of it all, they took the change (balance) without our permission, pretending it was their imposed tip! This is the first time we are treated like this in a restaurant. Just because it is located near the Opera and in Front of the Bristol, does not mean you have to pay that price! This comment is not about 10 or 20 euros. It is about bad service. We felt cheated on. Other than that, Vienna is a really lovely city with, among other things, excellent restaurants with decent...
