Authentic, lovely and cozy place. Hidden Gem. If you want to know what is eating in Vienna about, this is the right place 👌. I visited Gutenberg for first time almost 10 years ago and lastly two days ago and every visit was genuinely nice and every time I've got what i was looking for- the real Austrian cuisine 💖 (no pommes-frites, no hamburger). Actually, for first time i was just searching for "real deal" Wienerschnitzel made from veal - and hardly to believe, it's not that easy in Vienna these days (tourist will not find out that there is pork inside .. right?). Staff is very nice, speaks English, polite and can smile (that's lottery win in Vienna sometimes). Meals are very good, made with care and simple - something that you would get from your adoptive Austrian Grandma. They have always some room to sit ... even before Xmas .. even if over the corner is queue people hopelessly waiting for restaurant that is overhyped by touristic guides. So it real deal hidden Gem. And i can see that many visitors will be struct by oldschool look... but that's big part of the essence here, it's not pretending to be something ultramodern...it's Vienna Cafe / Restaurant style that is there for 60 years already! It should look like this and i love it. So i simply recommend to visit .. because as i feel it .. Gutenberg is way how you trick all the turistic traps, gets nice meal, bit of Austria with it and you are ready to...
Read moreWe had a 24hour layover in Vienna and stumbled across Gutenberg. I am so glad we did.
THE STAFF ~ OLIVER (our waiter) deserves so much credit. He was great with food suggestions, friendly, and always checking in with us! We even asked him for suggestions on a great bar to swing by; he took it upon himself to walk us outside and gave us personal directions. Hands-down OLIVER deserves a promotion and was so helpful in many ways. You should ask for him.
THE FOOD ~ The schnitzel here is absolutely amazing. Its nicely cooked, tender, and tasty. The GRILLED sausage + mustard was savory and a great primer for the main course. The drink selection is great and they have a few good drafts on tap. My date had the Beef Cutlet w/ onions and the meat was very tender and not overly done with spices.
If you are looking for a great place with authentic Austrian food, AMAZINGLY HELPFUL STAFF, and reasonable prices... look no further. We had a 5 star dining experience for a fraction of the price. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone interested in grabbing some tasty...
Read moreA rather unassuming but cosy restaurant in the centre of Vienna, which was visited due to the lack of space at other restaurants. Apparently it is also one of the oldest restaurants in the area too!
The vanillerostbraten and lentil stew were tasty and filling. When considering the price, slightly cheaper than nearby, I was very pleased. However, the kaiserschmarrn was less impressive - I prefer mine with brown sugar.
The service should be improved as the waiting staff seemed somewhat dismissive of their customers, both foreign and local. Staff were acting as if they had too many tables to cover and were operating reactively rather than proactive, i.e. I had to request a (dessert) menu rather than staff asking if I'd like anything else.
Lastly, I'd suggest being more gentle when putting down plates, cutlery, drinks and so on. This little thing makes a big difference to...
