My wife and I made our way to the Pirate Republic Taproom around lunchtime, after our first night in Atlantis. Neither of us were very hungry, and we brew beer at home, so we decided on grabbing a few bar bites and pints of local craft beer.
We were sat right away and our drink orders were taken about 5 minutes after being seated. I had the Blackbeer'd Stout, and my wife ordered the Captain Kidd's Kolsch. They came out pretty quick, which is a nice surprise, given the average Bahamian service we experienced during our trip.
We thought both beers were on par with what we expected. We're hard to impress, as there are so many good craft breweries near our home in the Bay Area, but they were drinkable. The stout was light in mouthfeel and the roasty characteristics they advertise were not tasted, but I give them points for making a style that doesn't fit their locality (who drinks a stout in the Bahamas? Apparently, I do). My wife's beer was your typical Kolsch - light, mellow, and pretty good on warm days. It'd probably make a decent radler with some fresh lemon.
Next, the food. We ordered the buffalo chicken wings (deep-fried) and some shrimp sticks (flat-top fried, no batter). It took them a while to prepare these two dishes, more in line with our overall experience with service. The buffalo wings were sauced well and the sauce itself had a great zing to it, while the shrimp sticks were seasoned simply, but beautifully. Both were cooked just the right amount, and paired well with the kolsch (not so much my stout, but I won't dock them points for that).
Oddly enough, they werved us light ranch with the wings... I'm not sure why they would use light ranch when the full fat ranch would have a much creamier counter to the sing and zest of buffalo sauce. Blue cheese dressing is also available, if you're into that.
We didn't have our phones, so we don't have pictures of our experience.
We had to explicitly flag down someone to get our bill - even after taking our plates away, they did not seem to want to give us the final bill. I'd understand them not wanting to rush us, but our subtle hints went unnoticed. Something to take note of when you visit the Bahamas in general.
Overall, we were very pleased with the experience. Next time, I'd try their IPA and a crispy...
Read moreI’d give zero stars if I could. To start, we order drinks and food (flight of beer, water, spinach dip, and chicken sliders)…. after 47 minutes (I counted) and other tables being quickly served, we still hadn’t received the water OR the flight of beers that we ordered. So we walked in and asked about it. “I’m sorry, it’s coming now.” Okay… 15 minutes later it finally showed up. Cool. 20 minutes later… no food still. We’ve now been at this place for over an hour and a half and all tables around us have been served. We came in to ask where the food is and the spinach dip is suddenly ready, plate burning hot, food burnt, because it had obviously been sitting under the heat lamp forever. At this point, I went in to say I want to pay for what we had and leave. Suddenly the sliders are ready. I said “ok, just close us out.” Then we get the check. She stated we’d get a flight of 5 beers for $15. Offered that she had an extra beer she could get us - clearly didn’t mention this one extra beer taster would cost us $5 extra dollars. When approached, Valence, the server, had an absolute horrible attitude. When asked to talk to a manager to get this solved, the manager refused to give her name and stated we were wrong and the price that was added was tax. Obviously that wasn’t the case, because the check was clearly laid out. According to this “manager,” Valence is an experienced server and can’t “ring it in” the way she advertised to us, so there’s no way she’d offer it. Not only that, Valence is screaming in the background saying “these people * questioning me!!!” This unnamed manager had to tell her to leave because she was acting out. But she’s an “elite employee.” Valence might have been having a bad day, but screaming and swearing at customers is WILD. Good luck with her and this unnamed manager that was working at 2pm on...
Read moreI love checking out the different beers of countries when I'm traveling so I was sure to try this when I visited the Bahamas for a weekend. When we got there the bar was busy but not crazy with travelers from the cruise ships. The bartender who we had (gentleman with a scar by his right temple) was very bad and pretty much ruined our experience. He came over after maybe 10 minutes and asked us what we would like. We asked for the Bahama Mama for my girlfriend and then I started to order a flight and he walked away ignoring me to go talk to other customers. He came back after maybe 3 minutes not making the drink and asked what I wanted. I said a flight and began to give the beers for the flight and he once again walked away ignoring me... After another 3-5 minutes he brought back the drink for my girlfriend and I finally gave him the 3 beer names I wanted in the flight.. at this point he took another 5-10 minutes before starting on the flight. During all of these breaks he is asking other people what they want and getting drinks. When I got the beer finally we had already had enough and asked for the bill. He said 17 dollars so I put a 20 down on the bar. He took it and put it away not asking if we wanted change or anything just assuming a tip for some of the worst service you could give. We were not happy but not the kind of people to make a big deal over a few dollars so we left. I did see them try to pull this on another person but they owed 12 dollars in change so the other person was adamant about getting it back... The beer was average. Nothing worth all that pain. I hope the bar sees this because that guy shouldn't be working...
