I spent well over an hour wandering around central Brussels on a beautiful Spring day with a good friend, and every lunch place we passed seemed to be packed or just about to close for the break between lunch and dinner. Beer, because it is the answer, drew us to Moeder Lambic. The chef here spent some time work in the kitchen of the acclaimed Noma in Denmark and it shows. The beer list is excellent and I chose the Quasar black IPA - a style I really like but don’t see all that often. The sauce on the carbonnade was complexly and delicately spiced and the beef was very tender - the beer was a perfect pairing. The potatoes, rather than frites, were a welcome touch as was the simple side salad which cut the richness of the stew. My friend had the onion soup - a large bowl of caramel ones onion yumminess accompanied by a slab of toast covered with melted comte. Moeder Lambic was a very pleasant surprise all the way around made even more fun by the excellent and attentive service. The only downside of sitting outside is that smoking is allowed and as we finished up a smoker plonked himself down at the table next to us. We went elsewhere for a post-lunch reward for all our walking.

I was looking for a place to hang out and grab a beer and this was exactly what I was looking for. Most places around Brussels seem to have more tables than bar space, but I was traveling solo and preferred the familiarity of bellying up to a bar. Moeder Lambic had a nice long bar for me to hang out at and a fantastic selection of beers; both their own and other Belgian beers. Some were truly fantastic! I feasted on the "Mixte" which is a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses. Perfect for dinner for 1, or as an app for 2-3. The cheeses were really good, and on par with some of the better cheese I can get in the U.S. The pates were exceptional!

2025 (Update): Moeder Lambic is still one of my go-to places for beers (and some food) in Brussels. Big selection of draft beers, honouring their name with high quality lambics, and a variety of beer styles from Belgium and beyond. Often not the big breweries, but the smaller ones that deserve it so much more. 2020 (Original): Great bar, welcoming staff that once they noticed I'm a beer lover went to extra mile to explain about the brewery and production of my chosen beer. A shame I didn't ask for his name, cause those people deserve to be honoured.

BE CAREFUL!!! DO NOT SIT ON OUTSIDE TABLES as a tourist! There are thefts circling waiting to steal from you! We sat on an outside couch and ordered two beers. Within 10 minutes a local attempted to steal my husbands backpack. My husband chased after him and retrieved the backpack. Multiple tables saw the theft, but no one interacted, interfered, or commented on the obvious theft. It was insane to me no one interfered. Within 5 minutes someone approached us in civilian clothes and asked to take photos of our IDs. We were hesitant to give our IDs in a different country, but the “police” said he would “put us in jail for 3+ hours” if we didn’t give our IDs! My husband was scared his identity would be stolen due to the previous incident, but didn’t want to be in jail in a foreign country. My husband asked for the police officers identification, which was denied, and then he was told “you Americans expect to be in a different country and don’t do what you are told.” We are Americans so overjoyed to enjoy the Belgium culture, however, this makes us apprehensive to visit again. Horrible experience.

HOWEVER, When I told our waitress, she said this was not uncommon and offered us her condolences as well and recommendation to make a report at police station, which we did. Loved our waitress!

In conclusion, great beer selection in a less than protected or safe area....

The most unapologetic staff I have ever seen!!

We are students who saved money after working in the holidays to travel to Belgium from Paris, and the staff at this bar broke out phone and didn't even consider to help us in any sense. We were crying as we were not even at any fault when they dropped our new iPhone 15 pro and cracked it. They were superiorly rude , and unapologetic and constantly told us to Shut up. I will never recommend this bar to anyone as they are the most selfish people we have seen. They treated us so bad and did not try to make up for their faults. It's a huge bar with so much sales but they could not even offer 100 euros to help us pay for the damages that THEY DID TO OUR PHONE. I hope they get the karma for ruining someone's savings and an important device that we bought after so much struggle. They are disrespectful and make the whole city of brussels a bad memory for us. We didn't deserve to be treated like that or to have our stuff broken. We paid for the beer and were just a normal customer. I hope someone sees this review and decides not to choose this bar because they don't deserve any good thing after treating students like dirt and making us feel smaller after making...

Ordered a beer and a coffee - the woman who served us ( I would guess she was in her twenties - with just below shoulder length mousy wavy hair ) was really rude and unhelpful. My husband particularly wanted to go here to have a beer as the reviews were good. We ordered a large beer and a coffee. The coffee was cold and I could not drink it like that so I politely went up to the bar to let her know - I gave her a big smile and asked if she spoke English - she nodded so I said it’s cold unfortunately so please can you just pour some hot water in it as I don’t want to be a pain - she took the coffee, turned away and then turned back round and forcefully placed the cup back on the bar. Not a word said to me! I actually just stood there as I was in shock and thought perhaps she is going to make me a fresh coffee and I missed something… But no - I hadn’t… She looked at me as if to say ‘there you are’…. I asked - is that it done? She shrugged!! Coffee was disgusting and still cold so I left it - I didn’t drink it - hubbie drank his beer and we left and will never return! Just a real shame to receive such bad service - when every where else we ate and drank has been so...
