The food is fantastic. We started off with the meat platter. It came with 3 different kinds of meat. We had some kind of fuet sausage, a fricandeau and roast beef accompanied with a mustard sauce. The meat platter is usually served with bread but they ran out. Upon request the waiter procured some bread from a nearby restaurant. Unfortunately the bread was stale but I give him an A for effort.
As a main course we chose the stoofvlees mémé gusta. It's a slow roasted beef stew and it's absolutely wonderful. It's served with stewed apples, french fries and a small salad with yoghurt dressing. I have to specifically note the appropriate portion of fries. I've noticed that lots of restaurant are skimming on the fries, leaving you with a kids portion for an adult price. I was very glad that the portion we received was appropriate for two adults.
The combination of flavours provided by the beef and apples is simply marvelous. Due to the stewing proces, all of the callogen in the beef has melted, leaving you with some of the juiciest meat you will ever eat. The stoofvlees is served in a pot filled with beef sauce which adds to the juiciness. It was like having an orgasm in my mouth. You will not be disappointed.
We also ordered the steak bearnaise medium. The meat was super tender and I was able to cut it with a butter knife. The steak came with a salad as well.
All in all, I'm extremely impressed by the meals and the kindness of the staff. Will definitely visit again and try the other options...
Read moreWhat a lovely find. Managed to book a table for our last night in Ghent, you definitely need to book. We managed to get a table for 18:15, which suited us. Initially we struggled with deciphering the menu as the English interpretation didn’t really explain dishes very well. However, one of the waitresses was extremely helpful and explained the dishes to us. Three of us decided to share three main courses between us and the fourth had the steak. They brought bread with butter and pork fat to share, with some small shrimps. I was the only one to eat the shrimp, which lovely but fiddly to get the shells off. We only had main courses. The pork stew, which they are famous for, the chicken with pork meatballs and a mushroom sauce and the cheese croquettes. One of the party had the steak bernaise. The three shared dishes were all delicious, with for me the pork stew being the best. Unfortunately the steak was slightly underdone, which the staff dealt with brilliantly and couldn’t fault how they dealt with it. All dishes came with fries and salad, although this isn’t clear on the menu. We were all full after this and so didn’t try the desserts. I must say though that all dishes, starters, mains and desserts looked good as they came to the surrounding tables. If I ever come back to Ghent I would...
Read moreI recently had lunch here with friends on a Saturday, and overall, we had a pleasant experience! The warm welcome and cozy interior set a great tone right from the start. We particularly enjoyed the fresh shrimp, which paired wonderfully with the bread, butter, and delicious pork fat alongside our cocktails.
We opted for just the main courses, and we were delighted by the remarkable flavors of the Belgian dishes. One unique touch was the sauce served straight from a saucepan, adding to the dining experience. However, I have to mention that some of the portion sizes felt a bit small for the men in our group, and the wait time was longer than we anticipated.
As Belgians, we found it to feel like your typical brasserie, albeit on the pricier side. I can see this being a fantastic spot for tourists looking to enjoy authentic local cuisine. It truly captures the essence of what a good Belgian restaurant should offer—food that reminds you of your grandmother’s cooking.
Is it worth it? If you’re a tourist, absolutely! For locals like us, it’s a solid choice but perhaps not the most affordable option if you're looking for the same dishes elsewhere. The combination of a warm welcome, high-quality food, and a cozy ambiance made for a memorable dining...
